Has anyone tried the 320mm brake upgrade kit from Vanem?
I am seriously considering doing the conversion. I am used to the brakes on my K6 gixxer and am finding it hard adjusting to "classic" brakes.
The kit seems to be good, but i am wondering if a 6 piston caliper is a bit too much for an SR. I have seen a few conversions with brembos. Does anyone know which is better suited to the SR?
Thanks

Or you can save some money by getting a good disc off a XJR, FJ 1200, FZR 1000, 2KR FZR 250, etc, any 4 pot from the wrecker and a "five eigths" master cylinder [stock SR is half inch] and talk to someone like dave at Albion m/c in brissy also if needs I can supply a spacer to fit the above disc to SR wheel to make it quicker, [ you can save over a grand, but its up to you] as ever at the service of the SR rider, Carl.

As I said, a spacer for about $90, a disc is usually $160/200, master about 120, but it requires you to do some thinking to save over a thousand dollars, but it all bolts up, even the kits you buy have a spacer........because they are only using a generic yamaha disc...from memory the disc bolt up is identical, if the SR disc is the same, the later one is the same, and you have the SR disc already.its up to you. or you can spend the money... but its all about the disc pads anyway, a thing called " co efficient of friction" is the key...

As Carl said, it can be just as much fun sorting out the problems for yourself... SR

I was thinking the same thing a while ago, but I think some braded lines and like Carl said, some good quality brake bads would do the trick.
I think a four pot or six pot caliper is a bit of overkill, but hey, thats just me! Looking at Col's bike the other day, it looks like he has a 320mm brake on his. Not sure if he's on the forum or not...

so is they any disc that is a direct bolt up? without a spacer? Yes and no. Yes, many discs fit the SR pattern (6 x M8 @ d80mm, d64mm center), e.g. many Brembo discs from Ducatis but also FZR600/1000 discs. No, these discs are too plane to leave enough space for a 4 or 6pot caliper, it'll hit the wire spokes. May work with cast wheels. Yes. Regards Sven

Here's a picture of a do it yourself brake upgrade using a 320mm FZR disc and the FZR 4pot caliper. Conversion was done bei rei97 in our german forum. He described it in all details, but unfortunately I can't find the thread...

A little bit of imagination, some machining etc and the job's done! As with the wire wheels, a spacer is usually required for spoke cearance if fitting a 4 piston or more caliper on...you will probably have to make a plate to hold the caliper unless you have one that matches the bolt mounting pattern...and the disc... Not as hard as it all sounds. Unlike this...heh, heh... SR

I just mounted a 750 Seca wheel with 2 disks on the front, added the second caliper and braided lines and didn't have to make any spacers.

This is veeeeeeeeeery interesting actually.
Thanks for boiling what boggles my mind pretty quickly into easy to digest segments there, Stew and Carl. Looks like you could be right - a bit of imagination and some patience and there's plenty of options as to what you can do.
Food for thought. Pity the wreckers charge an arm and a leg for bits and peices.
