Anyone know how similar the fork internals of SR500s and XS650s are? I ran across these fork valves that I thought would be nice to use on the SR if feasible. www.mikesxs.net/mikesxs-suspension.php?category_id=6.2MikesXS had this to say... "We do not have an interchange manual and have no way of knowing it they would fit. Be aware that parts bought as speculation to fit other makes/models cannot be returned. Mikes XS"

Well, I managed to dig up parts fiches for both bikes. The majority of internals are the same. I think I'll give these a try.

Yes, the springs from the last XS fit for sure, [midnight special] and are a good up grade, are your valves from YSS in thailand?I believe they are making similar to "gold valve emulators" for a much better price, don't dial up to much comp dampening though, rebound is the key for bumpy roads. regards Carl.

I bought some of these from the XS650 shop in Germany. I will let you know how I get on with fitting them to my SR500 forks.

I just tore down both yesterday ('78 SR500 & '78 XS650E). They are exactly the same internally. There is a difference in springs between the XS650 D & E models, but below the springs (damping rods) are all identical. Let us know how the damper valving works.

OK I can confirm that these will fit the SR forks. They do just drop in, I had the forks on my run about in bits to check. I can't comment on the set up, but range of adjustment is going to be the same as this will be the range over which the valve works. For the SR I'd guess the setting would be about the same as the XS as its only controlling the damping, the spring rate deals with the weight of the bike.
This set of cartridge emulators are destined for my project bike so they didn't get fitted today, just offered up to see if they do fit.
They won't fit the early XS650 forks (pre 76) as the damping rod is different, although I'm sure I could find a way to fit them if I thought it was worth the effort.
I run SAE5 fork oil, which many would say is too light, but you get a smoother ride (you loose a lot of the harshness) and the damping from the forks seems to match Hagon shocks very nicely. The SR is a very light bike and I've not had problems with a lack of damping using such a light oil.
