Hi all,
I am in the process of mounting my rear wheel, which is a disc brake rear, and am having difficulty in working out if i have the right spacers or not. I cant seem to get it to work with the spacers i have, it seems i have the wrong combination. I am now thinking that my parts bike, where i have swapped the wheel from, was missing these spacers all along. I have looked at the parts diagram, and have realised that i may have the incorrect spacer for the chain side of the wheel. I also do not have the dust cover, which is shown, although i have heard that SR's did not necessarily come with these. Does anyone happen to know where i can obtain a correct set of spaces for a rear disc model? It has me a bit confused at the moment. Even if someone has a photo of thier rear wheel assembly to compare with, i would be grateful.

I just went out to the garage to check my bike . I have only had the wheel off twice so my recollection and observation may be flawed. It seems there are really no spacers as I think of them ,that is thick washers. The brake side chain puller(chain adjuster) seems to have a thick washer welded on its inside surface. That and the caliper bracket seem to be the only spacers on that side. There is a regular chain puller on the chain side and the hub butts up right against it .There are spacers that fit into the wheel and I assume(maybe incorrectly)that they are the same for both style wheels. Looking at parts diagrams for both style of wheels the brake side chain puller on the drum brake wheel seems to have a thicker washer than the disc wheel ,that is the only difference I see. I hope this gets you started in the right direction. You can look at diagrams for both style wheels at the following link. www.yamahasportsplaza.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/default.aspx

As a follow up,the collar that goes in the disc side bearing seems to protrude a little more than a quarter inch beyond the hub surface, the chain side collar looks to be about flush with the hub maybe protrudes a slight bit but hard to see.

Thanks for the reply chew. What youve described is pretty helpful, it seems like the same combination of parts I have, which I thought was correct. I think i might have solved the problem, I found a split washer which fits the axle, which i think i might have omitted from the brake hanger side, and now it seems like it fits ok, reasonably tight, once the axle bolt is tightened. My only concern is that this split washer isnt shown in the assembly diagram. But there are a few things in the diagram which are different anyhow, like the presence of o-rings, and the dust cover on the sprocket side, all of which i didnt have. Ill see how it goes, it seems like all is fine.
Thanks again for your response, there are alot of good people on these boards.

I think thats the main problem with a parts bike , they can turn out to be lots of wrong parts as the rear end of the SR500 came with a few different versions . The YOM makes no reference to it either . Ive had 2 x 82s same month serial # 16 apart & the younger 1 had a rear disk ( the frames are actually slightly different as well as the swingarm) so all the chaintensioners don't interchange either & to top it off SR500s that went to UK & Europe were different again to what we have in OZ . I ended up completely stripping my partzer & boxing the bits in their order to make it easy, the bonus with that is you get to know what you got & what you can get rid of to help somebody out cheers Dave.

FWIW, it looks to me like the cush drive (chain) side is the same on all SR's and XT's, possibly with the omission of the plastic dust cover (irrelevant to spacing). So you know the spacing is right on that side.
On the other side, yes, the drum brake bikes have (SR) a thick spacer welded to the chain adjuster, or (XT) a thick collar not welded to the chain adjuster. The spacer portion is about .65" thick. Either way should work. I dunno if you should use a split washer in there, it might be flexible in some way and affect your axle tightness???
I've been working this as I'm in the middle of putting an SR400 rear drum on my '78 SR500 (stock disc).

That looks like it. The part no. corresponds to the one on the Seattle Sports site.
