I'm about to install my wire wheels on my bike, but I am not really sure how to do it. Well, I imagine its not that hard, but I don't want to mess it up and have them fall off when I'm hauling down the road! I know i have to use the existing axle, do I just stick it in and put the wheels back on? Any help appreciated! Here is a photo of the wheels (before cleaning):

Hi, If they are SR wheels I think that should go straight in. Do you have the spacers? Measure up the axles versus the bearing ID's and see how you go. You may even find that the original spacers may work as well? Have a go and see. Let us know if you have any dificulties and we'll certainly try to assist. SR

Thanks Stew!
Yeah, they are SR wheels, imported from Germany. I'll give it a go and I'll definitely post again if theres an issue. I'm not sure about the spacers though... hopefully I can use the originals.

Hi Andy Has your SR got a drum brake on the rear wheel on the original cast wheels ? If so there a direct replacement spacers are the same , just done the same thing on my Cafe project , but if you have a disc on the rear I'm not sure it'll fit without making a torque arm that fits the drum . I've had no experience of rear disc's on SR's Hope this helps LURCH

yes, the bike has a drum brake on the rear. I actually can't remember if its an '80 or '81 (I have two, and can never remember which is which). Thanks for the assistance guys. I'm excited to get these wheels on! I'll post pics when its done. Unfortunatly since I don't have a garage, I either have to wait for a non-rainy day, or drag it inside and work on it in my living room. Since I live in Seattle, looks like its coming inside! -Andy

Agreendrop - any chance you could measure your spacers when you have it apart and post the data here? I'm converting a disc rear to drum and the info would be handy. Just the diameter and thickness of your spacers, plus chain adjusters if they're thicker than usual. Appreciate it!

Miker, Yeah, I can post that info for you. It might not be until next week though, as I don't have time to work on it just yet. -Andy
