A dumb question, but I've no idea what the tool is or even looks like for the steering head bearing (it's the same as for the shocks) - I can kinda guess. What's it called, what's it look like, and what size do I need for the steering head bearing and the shocks?
Over the last week, my bike has begun (increasingly) shuddering at the steering head. I've never dealt with this before, but I guess the first thing to do is to tighten the head with that tool (according to Haynes manual), and if that doesn't work then to replace the bearing.
Thanks, Matt.

Matt, The tool you speak of is a C spanner. YOU Don't need it !!!!! Engineers will turn in their graves, but here go's. Get a screw driver (straight blade) or a decent size pin punch plus a hammer.
Under the top yoke you will see what looks like a thick washer with about 8 square slots. This is the bearing adjustment nut.
Now gently turn the nut clockwise by tapping the screwdriver whilst holding in one of the slots at an angle. Making sure not to force or over tighten the nut.
Once you have done that you need to lower the top yoke by loosening the fork bolts, tightening the bolt in the centre of the yoke and retightening the fork bolts.

First, loosen the big nut on top, then proceed with the above instructions.

Is your steering still smooth? When I tightened mine, I had what Thumperstuff Marc calls SR 3 position steering. You could go straight, full left, or full right. It was absolutely awesome on the highway, but sucked in the city. Now with the new bearings, my agility is greatly improved, but I still miss the stability at speed of my worn out bearings.

Yes worn bearing can make it a bit like a steering damper...tapered roller bearing make the bike feel like it has brand new steering again. SR
