I'm sure I've read discussion of this, but I can't find the thread. To tell if your pad has life or not, you need to check the red line on it. I can't make out any such line (in four months of ownership I've never seen it), and I suspect it is difficult to see even if the line is there. Do others have trouble with this?

Different bikes haven't different means in which to tell you when the pads are worn (off the top of my head I don't know what the old SRs used), but bare in mind that aftermarket pad, such as EBC, Ferodo etc, wont have these same marks.
Personally I want at least 2mm of friction material left on the pad. It's not just a matter of running out of friction material. . . as the pads get older they effectively get baked so the last few millimetres of friction material never have the same braking properties as when they were new.
