Hi all,
I know that this was discussed in a previous post, but I have looked and can't find the thread.
On the weekend, I was able to pickup a set of bent forks to use for parts to rebuild the forks for my XT500C which have had water in them ruining the damper rods etc.
Both the sets of forks have worn top bushes in them, and I know there has been a previous discusion about obtaining these bushes.
All help apprieciated.

Colin, My understanding is the bushes are part of the lower leg and can't be replaced. Curly

Are you sure Curly? I've pulled apart a lot of forks (none were XT though) at work and never come across one that you can't replace the bushes in.
If you're right, that makes for a pretty crap set of fork, I reckon.

The bushes are retained by a circlip, so I take it that they can be removed, my problem is they are not listed as a seperate part in any of the XT, TT or SR parts books that I have. One would have to think that I am not the only / first person to have forks with these bushes worn and want to find replacement parts.

The SR forks have very thin walled bronze bushes. No-one seems to like replacing them, I think they'd be hard to get out. I would imagine they are a generic part you can get from engineering suppliers, just like bearings and seals. Get them out and measure the id and od and wall thickness and call a few places.

That a great resource Aero but I'm sure when I stripped my forks down (1979 SR400) that the fork sliders did NOT have any bushes fitted the alloy was just machined to fit the stanchion ,this is fairly common on smaller capacity bikes of the era You've got me intrigued now I've got a set of XS650 forks ready for a rebuild (stachions badly pitted ) I'll pull em apart when I get a chance & look see Perhaps years & markets vary ? As I remember, that's right, no bushes, just straight into the ally.
If the ally gets worn I guess you machine the top to take a bush, doubt you'd be able to do this for the full fork leg though.
I've got one set of XS and one set of SR (think there are almost the same) to go for chroming. I'm probably going to use Philpot as they do all hydraulic rams, so must know what they are up to.

What sort of price do they ask aero ? I looked into rechroming stanchions but new ones were about the same price about £150 a set LURCH

I haven't had a quote, but I believe is about £100 a pair. They collect and deliver as well. Here's a link to their main website, the fork re-chroming is on a link on the page. Proper company! www.amphardchrome.co.uk/services.htm

You can replace the bushes, I have just done mine. The bushes are from the XVS250, Part No. 5JX-23125-00. Tricky to get the old ones out, be patient and careful, good luck.
