Hi I've seen loads of Sr's on the net with "standard " 2ls brake drums fitted ,the ones with the 6 vent holes on the right hand side . What models used a drum up front ? & what market were they intended for ? they seem to be very popular Japan and mainland Europe but nothing here in the UK . I've searched parts lists on line but cant find any drum brakes listed ,does anyone have a link to these part lists Best regards LURCH

Hi lurch, I guess it's only sold in Japan, isn't it? If you could read or translate Japanese, you can find the parts list from www.yamaha-motor.co.jp/parts-search/. But now yamaha has changed the brake system to disk from 2001. Also you can find some used ones at Yahoo Auction in Japan such as page15.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/t21971720 (the seller will shipinternationally!) or check this list out (unfortunately most of the seller won't ship abroad).

Thanks Tominaga I've got some good news ;D I've found a front drum, well actually a complete set of wire wheels with good tires for a knockdown price, I'm going to pick it up later this week ,can't wait I cant read the part lists on my PC ,wont tranlate for some reason ? its a new PC running Vista & I'm not fully up to speed with it yet . Could you please copy the front wheel parts diagram & part numbers and send them to me by email at jimsfjr@silverbike.freeserve.co.uk thanks or post here of course .
A drum brake set up I looked at on the net had a cast alloy bracket that bolted onto the mounting point for the left hand brake caliper & went behind the fork leg & locked into the slot cast into the brake backplate I'm using disk brake model forks so this would work for me great . The photo on the yahoo link looked like the brake has a different set up ,is there a cast lug on the inside of the fork leg ?
Just one more question , Do the Japanese SR's have 19 inch front wheels or 18 inch ? Thanks again LURCH

Hi Lurch, Good that you got a set of the wheels...they were available in Europe for many years with these brakes, so they should be fairly simple to come by for you...we can now get them in wreckers..at a fairly overly large price! The SR 's with the drums had 18" wheels front and rear...see the specs of one model here... www.yamaha-motor.co.jp/news/2000/01/31/sr400.htmlThey also had a bracket that attached to the disc lugs with the boss on it...otherwise they're the same fork as I understand. You'd need the bracket to make it easy for you. SR

OK, I'll send a copy by e-mail, which is from Japanese Service Manual, for the parts list on the web is only for WINDOWS and I'm using a Mac....
Because of the matter of COPY RIGHT, I couldn't make the photo up here, sorry.
The Japanese drum break models are fitted with 18 inch wheels and the forks are same as disk ones.
Hope you can fit it well!

100 ponds for wheels, brakes etc? That is unreal.
Could you al lexpand on the bracket you're talking about? I have daytona air shocks on mine, and I'm fairly sure I don't have the mounting bracket. Will i need it to mount my SR drum?

Hi,
The SR that has the front drum has a bracket that bolts to the folk leg at the poinbt where the disc caliper went on. It has a 'tongue' on it that mates up with a slot on the backing plate to stop the backing palte turning around when the brakes applied. I

Ahh, I think I know what you mean. It locks teh guts of the drum in place so the pads actually have something to apply friction too, otherwise when you hit the anchors, everything just keeps spining.
I'll have to track one down, or see if one will mount to my forks.....

...ah too quick with the typing again... ...the backing plate torque arm on a drum brake such as fitted to the front of my black CR does the same function... I guess the SR has the bracket so they can continue to use the same fork on all models... The SR front brake is pretty well based on the style of the XS1 650 front brake from the early '70s. A nice looking brake...Suzuki did the same thing with the front brake on the 400 Tempter...it appears to have been based on the 4 leading shoe drum from the 750 Suzuki...I reckon the Tempter brake would be a strong stopper. The SR's drum certainly is. Akira, have you had any experience with the power of the Tempter drum at all? I would really love to have one...or both front and back wheels really. SR
