When I first got my SR the former owner said " be careful of the Sui side stand" , the side stand seemed to have a mind of it's own and just fly up as soon as the weight of the bike was even slightly lifted. According to the manual this was deliberate on the part of Yamaha making it's retraction automatic, (duh) it makes it very dodgy if your like me and kick the stand down before you get off, once it shot up and I twisted my knee saving her. The side stand bolt is extended to interfere with the spring to make this happen and simply cutting the bolt short so that the spring misses done the trick. (side stand stays out until you put it back). If everyone finds this tip mind numbingly obvious i'm sorry, I'll stick to reading threads in future :-) Just thought it might save someone a bit of grief as my knee is still aching a fortnight later,,lol,,,,,,,,,Cheers, John

Hi, Luckily our sidestands are the non-auto retract type. Some of the European bikes that are for sale here aren't howver...makes for a problem just extending them to put the bike on the stand. SR

Hi there lads , yes I got caught with that on my mates SS900 Duke . I ended up with his bike on top of me after I'd pulled up to get off , luckily no damage to the bike or me but was embarassing but you get over that ! My Laverda had a side stand switch relay that used to play up (the dings have a lot of problems with auto electrics they should leave that tecnology to the Japanese & just buy it off them) so it doesn't exist now . I find the centre stand very handy on my SR (fueling & starting up) as they are a very easy bike to get onto the centre stand cheers from Dave .

Thanks for clarifying that Stew, I didn't realise that the problem is only on European bikes, many readers wouldn't have known what I was talking about. Looks Like Dave came out of his experience a little better than me, I reckon I done a bit of damage to my knee ligament, (ouch) Cheers, John,,,,,,,

Speaking of Ducati side stands...my brother's Darmah has a sidestand designed to maim. If you were to ever leave it down and ride off, it would throw the whole bike up in the air and sideways as it grounded. Not a good thing... SR
