So, everyone on this says how incredible their SRs handle. Mine is a 40hp wet noodle. I found a lot of slop in my steering head, and I tightened it up. The front end now feels pretty stable, but the rear end is all over the place. I actually pulled over, because I was sure I had a flat tire. Upon inspection I saw that the swingarm was pretty sloppy too. I went to place an order for bearings with Thumperstuff, but he sells bearings, bushings, thrust bearings... I simply can't afford all of those parts. Does anyone know what fails in the swingarm?

Hi,
In my experience it is the needle bearings that fail and the bushing/spacer tube generally needs replacing because of wear from the needle bearings. I have not personally had to replace the thrust washers in any of my bikes. If the swingarm area has not been maintained well you may find it ery difficult to remove the swingarm piviot bolt, I have had to drill both the ends off/out of one to get a swingarm out of a frame.

The swing arm shaft can also wear and that results in sideways movement between the shaft and the bushes...this can be disconcerting. A temporary fix is to rotate the swing arm shaft 90 degrees to take the wear on the shaft surface away from the area of sideways movement...loosen the nuts and turn it...but you should look at replacing it. All the bits can cost a bit as you say, but once done you shouldn't need to replace them again for years...so long as you remember to grease them regularly. Sounds like your rear shocks may not be real healthy in the damping area either...there are a myriad of aftermarket shocks to choose from depending on your budget. For the money I prefer Ikon's (Koni's) for a fairly standard bike. A tapered head stem bearing kit might not go astray eiither. You'd be amazed at the difference. All these things will revitalise a tired chasis. Take the changes one step at a time...I'd start with the swing arm bearings and associated bits... SR

Hey joneill4: I have an extra swingarm pivot point assembly. All the parts are included and are in good, used condition. I checked them and there's no play or slop. Even the roller bearings are in good order. I would just clean the whole assembly, grease it up well, and it would be ready to use. If you can pay shipping from the US (weight is 2 lbs), you can have it. It's doing me no good sitting in a box, rather it go to good use. Let me know via PM if you're interested, and I'll check shipping to your local, (your location is undisclosed in your profile). Thanks. Gary

Just my luck! I just bought the bearings and bushing from Thumperstuff. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the offer though. If my problem is more than bearinings and bushings, I may try to contact you next week or so. BTW, I'm in Maryland.
