my chain was a bit too loose and came off today when i was slowing down at a junction, it cracked the cover over the front sprocket and i have noticed that when i hold my rear sprocket with a finger on each flat side of it i can wiggle it a little side to side, surely this is not right? am i risking my life riding this thing?
yours worryingly,
Damo

Remove the cover and inspect the damage! Hopefully you just broke the mounting lugs on the engine case for the primary sprocket cover without going into the case. I have a bunch of destroyed cases here that have holes in them from exactally the same set of circumstances. Sometimes they break off without any major damage, other times they can leave a dime sized hole.
FYI.... I make and sell engine case savers on ebay to avoid this from happening.

You need to have a little wiggle.Check your front to rear sprocket alignment. Sight along the top of the chain as you spin the wheel and you will see if it coming off the sprocket crooked. Also pull the chain rearward with your fingers off the rear of the back sprocket. The chain should not come off very much. If you can see most of a tooth its time for new stuff. You can actually get away running a too wide chain if your alignment is right.

If the chain has de-railed for an underlying reason other than chain wear/tension it could be potentially lethal, face it if it had happened at 70 MPH instead of slowing down at a junction you might not have been here to talk about this. If you're not sure get it checked out, I don't like the sound of the free side to side play that you described on the rear sprocket. Take care,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,UK

I'm sorry . I read this as the chain moving slightly side to side on the sprocket, not the sprocket itself moving. Thanks for catching that guys.

cool, ive just realised the manual i have is for the 77-79 sr500 with the 6spokes wheels, not the wire wheels that i have which means itll be a different hub etc. im going to have a good look at it tomorrow, ill update soon.

okay, heres an update, ive bought a new chain, just waiting for delivery but im still not sure about this wiggling, ive uploaded a short video of it, not sure how easy it is to see the movement though, think you can see it about halfway through best (its only about 30seconds long anyways) and also when i pull the chain back, is the result due to chain wear or sprocket wear or both? heres the vid media.putfile.com/rear-sprocket-and-chainDamo

Damo, I've seen the video something is drastically wrong there,,,LETHAL!!!!!!!! And if that's how much movement you get from finger strength imagine how much it could move under the enormous torque delivered from the drive? ?? Could it be the cush drive rubbers have totally had it ?? I don't know. Take Care,,,,,,,,UK
