Time to reassemble my wheels on the cafe bike. I had a set of wheels I got off of ebay powdercoated. Now, I'm putting in new bearings, freshly surface ground and drilled brake discs, etc. I know the sealed part of the bearing is supposed to face outward. On the rear, however, there are two bearings on one side that I'm not sure of the proper orientation. My guess is that the unsealed sides of the bearings should face each other. Also, how is the spacer with little stamped flange held in place when installing the other side of the wheel's bearing, closing up the assembly. The front looks fairly straight forward. The rear is the mystery. Thanks for any help!

I think the spacer just kind of sits in there, generally of course the axle holds it centered along its whole length. But you want to be able to tip it a little, otherwise you've got no way to get a drift on the far bearing to pound it out next time.
Good question on the 2-bearing side, I'll be watching for the answer - got one to do myself.

I don't think so. The single bearing that is sealed on both sides is larger than the other two and goes on one side of the wheel. The remaining two bearings only have seals on one side. and go on the other side of the wheel hub (cush drive side). So, again my question is: Both of the bearings (with only one side sealed ) installed with the seal out, or, installed with unsealed sides facing each other filled with grease??

Sounds like you got it right to me , seals are usually on the outside ( keeps the dirt out) I think you may be doubting your common sense (don't do that as it is the best way to work on your bike) Cheers from Dave.

Have a look at this pic in the link. When you click on the pic after you get the link, it should blow up nicely. You will see the the two similar brg's are on each side of the spacers. The odd ball brg is against the outer brg on the sprocket side and then a seal is outboard of that. I forget the orientation of the brg seals though. I would likely install them facing outwards. i15.tinypic.com/4p01lwp.gifG Man
