anybody know anything about some wire wheels that were offered on the SR in Germany? I might have a line on some. Are they good? Are they any better/worse than using xs wheels?

If you're talking front drum brake wire wheel, hard to find here in the states imho, so grab it says I. If it's a disc front wheel, many wire wheels (mainly XS650) are a direct bolt on and are plentiful here. The rear wire wheel made for the SR will have the cush drive (debate exists over whether cush is actually necessary or not...most say it is), so that's a good grab also. It's probably a drum brake rear (not sure any wire/disc rears exist), so as long as you have an '80 or '81 drum brake SR, should bolt right up, no issues.

Thanks Gary. I'm pretty sure the front is a disk. No idea about the rear. Just so you know, here's the deal i'm looking at. Basically this guy has a tired ole SR that hes selling for $800. Its a runner but got ALOT of miles, getting leaky and temperamental. Its got supertrapp exhaust and a bunch of other parts from Thumperstuff. With the bike comes a box of parts (some of which i need to complete my project) 36mm mikuni slider, and the aforementioned German wire wheels. He will NOT separate the parts from the bike. Is it worth it or stay away? seattle.craigslist.org/see/mcy/316734550.html(he has more parts than what is shown)

If I had the $ I'd grab it. Probably only needs a top end job. That'll get you the parts you need, and you could eBay the rest.

not knowing the condition, I say grab. Supertrapp's are pricey ontheir own, plus all the other bits.

Well, I went ahead and purchased that bike. I got the whole thing for $750. I rode the bike home, and around a bit last night. Actually runs and rides really good. Probably needs the carb adjusted a bit though, as it takes quite a few kicks to get it going.
Cool things that I got with it (not installed):
-36mm carb and throttle assembly -complete head assembly (minus piston) bored to 540 -NOS sidecovers, although they don't match -German wire wheels-- disk front, cush drive rear; in good shape, with tires mounted. -front and rear drilled disks, plus the disk that is installed is drilled as well.
Plus i got a couple boxes worth of random little pieces... nuts and bolts, lights, handle bars, spare tank, fenders, petcocks, and more.
I think I got an ok deal. Now I have to start installing some of those parts.

Yeah, now is the really fun part!
For starts, I'm gonna ride this one as is, of course do some minor adjusting and tuning. And I'm gonna use a couple of the parts to get my other bike running, as it was non running when I got it. I think the motor in that one will be the better one, but hard to say. If so, I may swap it into this new bike, take the old one out and install the 540cc head and put it in my other bike. I'll probably make that bike a "real" cafe racer, complete with clipons, rearsets, and a solo seat. Maybe an aluminum tank from the Tank Shop?? ;D But that will all be down the road a bit. For now, I'll just ride the one that actually rides. Probably put those German wheels on it pretty soon, though. And paint the tank a better color. Oh, and since this thread is supposed to be about the wheels, I have a question... There are no axles in those hubs, do I need special axles? Or can I use the current ones on the bike? Thanks guys! I'll post pics when I get a chance to take them.

Cool plans! Should simply need your existing axles.

Anyone know if the later-model foreign (German, Japanese) SR spoke rear hubs are aluminum, or magnesium like the old XT?
