Hi Guys,
Looking to get a rear wheel to match the nice wire front I have. Does any one know where I would be able to get a standard sized rear wire wheel or hub for the SR 500. I've heard that XS650s and RD350s are the same but don"t know for sure. New or used doesn"t matter so long as it is in good nick and for a road bike.
thanks

The XT500 hub is the perfect candidate, as it's the same hub used on European SR's that came standard with wire wheels. It has a cush drive and if you have a rear drum brake version SR, fits straight on, with very little fussing about.

Sorry, should have mentioned that I would really prefer a disk braked rear. Did any of the XTs or TTs come with disks?

Hi, The later model XT/TT 600's did. It's a matter of going through the wreckers to see what they have. That wheel has a cush-drive in the hub as well. A usefull addition. SR

Hi all,
The late model XT/TT600 rear whire wheel does have a disk brake, but fitting one into a SR is a major engineering exersize. I fitted an XT600 wheel into my orange cafe racer, (for a bit of a look, see the Post "20 years of Evolution").
The main problem is the XT600 wheel is far too wide to fit the SR swingarm. To get it to fit, I cut the hub in half, then machined about 75mm (I think, it was a while back) out of the middle before making up a jig to hold the two halves true and getting them welded back together. A time consuming job and probably an expensive one it you have to pay someone to do it.
I think the first model SR500 released in the UK had a disc brake wire wheel, maybe someone in the UK can confirm this?

Hi, That'd be an undertaking to machine it after cutting it in half and then weld it back together accurately...well done; although it's probably out of the average modifier's range... There are other Yam wheels that'd suit such as the TDR 250 rear hub and probably others. These can be difficult to find; I am looking for one at the moment... The early SR's in the UK had a rear drum as far as I recall...albiet with the backing plate inverted...Japan the same. There are other rear hubs that can be used as well. I recall that my mate had modified one from an old Yamaha rear wheel...it's just that I've forgotten what model it came from...old age...heh, heh...that wheel required a spacer to re-align the rear sprocket to the front. I'm wondering if there is an early 80's mx rear hub (YZ, WR?), when Yamaha transitioned to rear disc brakes, that may work. Would lose the cush drive, but guys running XS rear wheels seem to not comment about any problems.

I looked at the 80's YZ rear wheels before getting the XT600 wheel and they were all to wide to fit into the SR swingarm, so I settled on modifying the XT hub.

That was a good effort there Col , I wouldn't have thought of that one myself (if you saw my machining you would know why). You must be like "Macgyver" and have one awesome shed ! Cheers from Dave.

Has anyone ever had some custom wheels built? I imagine that would cost a pretty penny, but it seems like the best alternative, especially if one is interested in retaining a rear disk and running new parts.
Any experience with new custom wheels?
Best wishes, Morgan Bearden Rolla, Missouri

Hi Morgan, I have had a front one made for my new cafe racer...I used a Talon twin disc hub, strong stainless spokes and an Excel rim...nice looking wheel...about $1,000 though...I had to source bearings to suit the R6 front axle that I have used and I got those from a Honda SP1 (RC51) front wheel. I am only going to run one disc at the moment but it's good to have the choice. Most Talon hubs only come with a single disc...as the Supermotard ones are... For the rear I am looking for a hub at the moment. I have looked at various options as I still want to run a cush drive...and a small disc. Yamaha XT660 etc...I am also getting a swing arm made so the width isn't such an issue for me...but the sprocket alignment and the centreing on the bike is of course. So I am still looking for the perfect hub...there are some that the Japanese use but they are hard to come by and expensive. I will mate the rear hub to an Excel rim with the stainless spokes as well. SR

Hi Morgan,
I can only agree with Stew. Having custom wheels made up is very expensive. The front and rear wheels that I had made up for my Supermotad project cost $1300 AUS back in 2001 and I supplied the hubs! The $1300 was for having the hubs powder coated and having 17" Excel rims laced with HD stainless steel spokes. It also took 4 months to get the rims that I wanted!
