Hi all,
I have finally got my act together and have the local machinist making up a custom front axle and spacers to fit an 18" mag wheel (from a XS250?) into the SR classic racer that I have been building forever.
Now, a question for the racers out there. The mag has a 1.85 width, what width tyre should I fit? I am thinking of running Bridgstone BT45's front and rear, any other surgestions?

Fenz,
Since the wheel that I am using has bearings with a 15mm ID, I have had the STD SR front axle machine down to 15mm diameter, and have had a spacer (15mm ID x 17mm OD x 36mm long) made that I will Loctite into the R/H fork leg to cater for the smaller axle.
As I want to do away with the speedo drive, once the wheel is fitted into the forks and centred, I will get some spacers made up to located the wheel correctly. Once I have hade these spacers made (and check that all is as it should be) I will post the dimensions.

I just made the same mode to my project SR using the front wheel from a '80 XS400. My machinist turned the SR axle and made a spacer/bushing for the right side fork from Yamaha p# 90560-15161 which is the internal center spacer for the 400 wheel. He turned down all but 5mm of the spacer to 17mm OD so, it slips into the fork leg from the inside. I'm still using the speedo gear but it's center piece could maybe be used as a spacer? What about a seal?? I'm running a 90/90x18 Avon AM20 Roadrunner mainly because it fits my project for authenticity.

Sounds good.I think the 18 inch front wheel is the way to go for track track bike.

I am giving the drawings for the new spacers to the machinist today. The spacer to replace the speedo drive will have a stepped flange on it to fit into the large diameter seal in the hub, once I have the spacer and am sure that it fits/works I will post some drawings of it.
I fitted the 18" wheel into the forks for the first time last night, and the front mudguard looks totally wrong. I am thinking of getting the front guard from a RD350LC or similar, thinking that it will suit the smaller wheel better. What front guards do others that have gone down the 18: front wheel use?

Hi, Just a quick thought for you guys...you are probably able to get a standard wheel bearing with a 17mm ID that would go straight into the XS wheel...perhaps even an SR front wheel bearing? I haven't done that partuicular change but it is definitely worth a look around at other bearings... Then all you need to do is to drill out the XS bearing spacer to 17mm and you could use the SR's axle... Just a quick thought... SR

Oh yes...as for a tyre perhaps a 90 or at the most a 100 width would suit...I personally favour the BT45's... SR

Hi Stew, I tried to no avail to find replacement bearings. The 18" wheel uses a 42mm OD bearing(6302). The 17mm ID bearing(6303) has an OD of 47mm. I found nothing in a standard bearing for 15x47mm. Pity though, at $8-9 each it would have been much cheaper than machining the axle.
Colinjay: I used a universal alloy front fender from Domiracer that's made in England for 18/19" applications and universal Wassell mounts from Unity in the U.K.

Hi Dave, Ah OK...thought that I'd mention it. I had difficulty finding bearings for the front of my Talon hub but eventually found that the bearings from the VTR SP1 were the right size...sometimes you can find them on other bikes as well... If you can get one with a slightly larger ID you can also sleeve the inner race down to 17mm as well. I've done this on the rear of my black cafe racer...Yamaha does this on some of their production bikes as well. Have fun with your bikes. SR

Hi Stew,
I had a look into different bearings so I could retain the std axle, I even got a bearing data book from a contact at CBS, but there just isn't a std size bearing that will fit. I have sleeved down bearings to fit a different rear wheel as you say and have not had problems, but machining the axle was the easist way of sorting out the front wheel fit.
