I also have a dt 250 hub with drum brake and cush what should I do? I can build any of these up with the rims I have so now the question is which hubs do I polish or paint? thanks Robert

Hi there,
I agree with Sjef, that a cush drive hub is prefered, I think they give a better chain and sprockets life than if you run a non-cush drive hub. However the TT500 has a non-cush drive hub and I haven't heard of many transmission problem for TT's, especially considering the flogging they tend to get in the dirt.
I actually ran a TT rear wheel in my cafe racer for many years and never had any problems with the transmission.
I have only had one gearbox failure in 25 year of riding 500s and that whas while motocrossing with a hot SR engine in a Husqvarna frame. I landed a high speed jump with my foot on the gear lever and accidently tried to change down to 3rd gear while under full power in 4th and broke a couple of engagment dogs in the gear box, however I would not say that this was due to any weekness in the gearbox or related to the rear hub.

I have to agree that in all the years of playing around with 500s i have never had a gearbox fauilure and is fairly rare to hear of one.
Yamaha certainly got this box right when they designed it as they can take a lot of punishment.
