Hi,
Was replacing fork seals this weekend. Right side, no problem, Left - oops! Damper rod spins with the bolt, so I can't finish disassembly or even tighten it back up. Anybody ever use/make some kind of tool to hold the damper rod? The fork slider's mounted in the vise, and after removing the cap, spacer and spring from the "top" I can see the damper as it spins when I turn the bolt from below. Suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Hey Mark: I kind of rigged a device that worked out. I took short, a 19mm bolt, cinched a couple of nuts on it, held that with a socket so just the bolt head stuck out of the socket and used a long (24") extension to hold it down in the fork lower. Also, I used an air wrench to remove and replace the bolt. Worked well for me, others probably have a better method. I'm pretty sure that one of the tools in the oem tool kit holds that damper rod as well. It needs an extension to get it down into the lower though. Good luck! Gary Hopwheels

Hi, I made one out of a length of threaded rod bent over for a handle and a couple of nuts jammed against each other...also (...you havn't said if you've already disassembled the forks...) it may be easier to re-assemble them and then with the lower end of the fork carefully held in soft jaws of a vice, push the leg in against spring pressure as you try to turn the allen key. Usually this will allow it to come undone... SR

Hopwheels - you say 19mm bolt. Is that the hex size? Can't get to it for a couple of days, but I'll report back one way or t'other.
Cheers.

Yes, I believe the hex head on the damper is 19mm. Someone may be able to give a more solid confirmation. Maybe someone has there forks apart also?

Thanks guys - I'll make something up from my leftover nuts-n-bolts. Just having the size gets me halfway there.

This just an update - in another thread, someone else was dealing with this issue - the internal hex size for the damper rod is 17mm. I used some leftover bolts and nuts whose hex size was also 17mm, locking them together to create an ersatz 17mm allen wrench. Wrapped a little masking tape around the end placed into my 17mm socket to keep it there and then used enough extensions to reach the damper rod in the fork tube. Worked very well. Hope others can take advantage of this when working on their machines.
