Well, my '78 (Molly as she's affectionately known now. Why? I dunno. Seems like an 'ol gal's kinda name and now I've got a ton of time into 'er, so a name seemd due.) is back on the road. All new bright work (both fenders, headlight bucket, handle bars and instrument buckets), new cables, rebuilt forks, about 30 hours so far of bolt shining, and polished the bright areas and repainted the black on both rims. Also the whole carb thing. Put the #330 main in, still a little hesitation (I'm sure the slide cut on the minton mods takes care of that, that'll come soon). BTW, the float problem seems to have vanished, perhaps it just needed to work itself out with fuel in it and a couple of rides? Adjusted the cam chain, bled the front brakes, put the progressive shocks from my non-running vexing the hell out of me '79, onto this bike, etc., etc., etc. And a ridiculous amount of holding little bolts, nuts and washers up to the wire wheel. Not a complete down to the frame restore... but the 'ol gal is sittin' pretty just the same. See 'ya 'round the garage. Take care lads. Gary Hopwheels And some pics of the process. I like this one, across the tanks of my bikes. This was when I started bolting everything back on the front end, and before starting the back. Yes, masking the wheels was a beee'atch!

Hi, Very nice job Gary. Well done. Good to hang onto that one as a collector's bike. I should do one up as standard again...but I keep changing them...it's a disease! Maybe if I buy another one (...to modify) then I can restore the E model I currently ride to it's former glory...who knows. Anyway...good job! SR

Sweeeeeeet! Nice job, great attention to detail. I find it's hard sometimes to put the time into the little things. However, it's the little things that raise a bike up to a higher level. The SV's are a great hot rod, aren't they? I would like to get one too. Talk to you soon, G Man

Hi Gary,
Nice job on getting Molly back on the road!
Can you say where you got the bright work and other bits and pieces to get her back up to snuff?
Thanks,
Marc

Thanks guys! Marc, I won the tach and speedo buckets on eBay, NOS ones appear from time to time. The headlight bucket, and both fenders came from an OEM Yamaha parts dealer I use in Joliet, IL (their prices on oem stuff are lower than Cali dealers), yamaha.motogrid.com/pages/parts/default.aspx . All those parts say they're backordered on the site, but really only took a few weeks. If you have the patience it's worth it! The only thing I haven't been able to put my hands on are new headlight ears and chain guard. I tried re-chroming mine, but the chromer couldn't get all the pitting out, so it shows up close (so no show quality there, but it is better than how they were!) Gary Hopwheels

Hey sjef! Yes I am. You can email me directly about them at ghopkins@hopwheels.com if you like. Shipping would be to Fallbrook, CA, US 92028. You wouldn't happen to have NOS side covers or rear seat cowl would you in the black/gold w/graphics in place? I'll be after a NOS head pipe and exhaust at some point as well (seem to remember some company that made replica oem exhaust?) Those are next for me to find. Thanks! Gary Hopwheels

Nice Work, Gary. ;D
The re-painted wheels have come up looking great!
What sorta paint did you use - aerosol can, or have you got a compressor/spray gun?

Hey CL: Rattle-can acrylic laquer. Thoroughly cleaned the wheel, roughed up the old paint, cleaned with a PRE cleaner/degreaser, then 3 thin coats of universal black (about 70% to 80% gloss it looks like, not a true semi, and not a true gloss). That'll do 'er. Gary Hopwheels PS: G Man, yep the SV hauls buckets, but I'm just a cruiser. No real canyon carving yet, maybe some day. Just took it out for a quick spin for an hour to blow out the cobwebs... woot! Here's a pic of the silver surfer...
