Can anyone advise? The XT I'm cleaning up seems to have pretty much the same drive system as my SR. It looks like the hub that the rear sprocket bolts to is actually a cush drive setup. Is this correct? There is a dust cover about 3 inches in diameter in the centre of this. Behind the dust cover is a retaining circlip. behind the circlip is a ring with 6 holes in it. I assumed that this was a threaded device and that the 6 holes were for unscrewing it, but when I started turning it, it revolved lots without actually screwing out. Is it just a ring held in by the circlip with no threads involved? In the end I just revolved it back the other way about the number of turns I used in trying to wind it out, than put the circlip back in. There is a grease nipple, when I pumped it with grease, grease came out of two of the holes in the ring. Does this all sound normal? Mick.

Can anyone give me a hint towards getting that big retaining circlip out? There's no holes in the end for snap-ring type pliers, and I can't seem to get under it to pry it out of the groove.

Thanks lurch - no, mine doesn't have the slots in the end. I suppose I'll just have to force some pointy thing under it... maybe a curved pointy thing would work better, something like... a similar circlip with a sharpened end???
Mine is an 81 XT rear hub, BTW.

<rosannadanna> Never mind! </rosannadanna>
Close inspection with my hyperpower xray headmounted magnific peeper-helper reveals two holes so plugged with polished dirt that I couldn't see them with the human eye. Regular snap-ring holes tho, not like your slots above, so they musta made them both ways. Thanks again!

OK miker when you remove the circlip the groove with probably have a burr on it ,just scrape around it with a bearing scraper ,a strong penknife will do ,then the the alloy cover (the thing with the 6 holes in it ) may just drop out if turned upside down or like me screw a couple of large self tapping screws in opposite holes and it should wiggle out .inside the cover is a boss with a bearing on the outside of this boss theres a groove with 2 semicircular rings ,a bit like a broken piston ring , wiggle these out of there groove and the cushdrive will just pull off . Hope this helps LURCH

The alloy cover was a little stuck but I put a pin in one of the holes and lightly tapped it in a circular direction, and it eventually worked itself up. All apart now! Many thanks.
