Does any one know if having the nuts & bolts on the SR re-plated in zinc/cadmium will affect the tensile strength ? I've had all my metal stuff done and they look very nice but one of my buddies said he thought sending electrical currant through metal weakens it & I may have to have them re tempered . Better safe than sorry LURCH

Don't worry, they were originally plated in the same manner after heat treat. The current used in plating should not heat them enough to change the temper.

Hi there.
For general applications the loss of ductility (tensile strength) caused by electroplating is not significant. What I think you may be eluding too, is hydrogen embrittlement, which is a problem that can effect high strength steel alloy when chrome plated. It is caused by hydrogen atoms being "trapped" within the molecular structure of the metal after plating. It is normally reduced by heat soaking the items after plating to "free" the hydrogen from the alloy. It may be an issue in the aerospace industry, but should be something to worry about on a SR500. Having said all that, I have had the heads snap off quite a few allen screw that I have had chrome plated over the years. Every time it has happened while tightening them up, never "while in service", so I has not been any real problem.

Hi, A lot of the standard bolts are bright zinc plated. Cad plating is OK on high strength bolts, spokes etc. but as stated you need to have them heat soaked after to prevent embrittlement... Zinc looks OK and is cheaper as well. Hard to find many places that cad plate non-aircraft stuff these days anyway...nasty stuff to work with. SR

Thanks Guy's Now i can start putting things back together on the cafe racer project I've been off the site for a while as this PC has been leading me a dance over the past couple of months ,in PC terms its probably older than the 79 SR but what do I spend my limited cash on ,new PC or nice n shiny SR parts ? guess what , the SR wins ;D So far I've stripped the frame & ground off all the unnecessary brackets moved the tank mounting stubs back a inch or so & powder coated the frame & associated parts in gloss black Rebuilt 2 front brake calipers with new S/S pistons (thanks to Dunlop aviation Shh) & stripped & rebuilt the XJ650 master cylinder all painted in silver 2K Found some wire wheels that cost an arm & a leg and looked like they had been at the bottom of the ocean for the last 10 years Stripped & polished the seriously corroded /pitted alloy rims ,took hours Powder coated the hubs in gloss black & fitted new wheel bearings & seals .I'm going the have the wheels rebuilt with polished S/S spokes at Central wheel Co , they do all the Hinckley Triumph wheels . if any one knows of a drum brake for sale please, please PM me ,i would much prefer the "old style " look Also stripped ,filled (too much ) & and primed the XJ 550 tank I'm going to use & found a new petcock that fits (XJ400) Rebuilt the front forks but the tubes have pitting on the chrome so sweated out the oil from the surface with a gas torch & filled the Pitts slightly proud with epoxy and sanded smooth with 2500 wet & dry paper and installed fork gaiters , so there might be a chance of it staying leak free also pre loaded the fork springs 3/4" and filled with 15 grade fork oil I have amassed a large box of new parts over the past few months ,stuff like Manx sweptback header pipe ,peashooter silencer single GRP racing seat new race cam ,the list goes on & my bank balance goes down I'll try to post some pic's soon if I ever get to figure out how to get my digi camera working again , PC wont recognize it since it started playing up If I don't post again before ,have a WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS GUYS ;D ;D ;D ;D LURCH
