Ive just dismantled my forks and yes there is a bush below the seal .It looks like its coated with Teflon or some other anti friction stuff it also seems to be split like a piston ring to aid fitting . I was going to have the sliders powder coated but I'm not sure the coated bush will stand up to the 285 deg C temperature ,any ideas how to remove it without damage ? I have a Japanese parts book for a SR400 which covers model year 2001-2 and the bush is listed as part no 5JX-23125-00 I typed this number into Google & it did show a SR page but only in Japanese also tried it on my parts cross reference software but no wasnt found ,it only covers north America/Canada
My SR started life as a 400 ,the registration documents say its a 79 but I'm not certain its correct as this bike wasn't officially imported into the UK . Its also has a odd engine no 2H6 no other digits ,theres usually another 5 or 6 here in the UK the frame no starts 2J4""""" One other thing ive noticed is that the swinging arm bush's are not needle rollers like european models just a white nylon bush ,I cant feel any play in the swinging arm so just reinstalled it after powdercoat ,dont fix what aint broke ;D
Cheers LURCH

Hi, Hmm...I know what you mean about the bushes. I had to replace some in my YZ465 \H model forks yeras ago now. I had them on an XT500. I ended up gettinh J model bushes for them as the H model ones weren't listed...they didn't work the best. Perhaps try Deus, they should be able to source them from Japan for you and send them over as they import new SR400's from Japan. Perhaps also try Adrian at Vanem here in Aus as well. Shibuyagas??? Yeah Stew, I have also had to replace these type of bush's a good few years ago on my Honda VFR750 ,but those bush's popped out when the fork tube was removed . As I said I was going to have the sliders powder coated as the aluminum was gouged quite badly by the PO. The thought of having to wait for parts from Japan via OZ didn't sound very appealing so spent most of today ( I work nights) in the garage polishing ,the results were very pleasing IMO
While on the subject of powder coating they say that they bake the powder at around 285 deg C , I was thinking of getting the cylinder head ,barrel & the crank cases coated ,would the powder coat stand up to the heat ? I think I read somewhere that the oil temp on our bikes rarely goes above 80 C would that mean the alloy castings are about the same ? Has any body had there engine coated ? I fancy having the head ,rocker cover & middle cases in satin black with the edges of the fins polished along with the clutch alt, sprocket & valve covers should look real nice I'm just waiting for the wheels to come back from the builder but they said it'll be about 2-3 weeks cos there very busy ,then I'll start putting it all back together .I don't wanna post any pics yet because I feel a little embarrassed as I've been working on the bike for what seems like ages and all there is to show is a nice shiny frame and a huge box of new parts I've collected . Take care LURCH

Hi Lurch, Not sure about the powder coating. Certainly the engines on the XT and some later SR's have a black paint on them. This is fairly tough paint. Plastic coatings such as powder coating are more akin to an 'overcoat' on the engine and will probably serve to maintain heat in the metal rather than pass it on to the air. However I do love the look of the red engine on the Honda CR's etc. There are probably much better specialist heat proof finishes available such as VHT etc. that could do a better job of transferring the heat to the air. There are some pretty fancy finishes these days, ask around. My oil temp gets up toward 100 deg C during the Summer. Not sure about the temp of the head during operation. It does get pretty hot. I'd say well above 80-100 degrees, but exactly how hot I'm not sure. I know on an aircooled head there is a large difference between the exahust area of the head compared to the intake area. This is why they chose to go to water cooling for more power. SR

Lurch Thanks for the part number 5jx 23125-00. This is the right part also fits A XVS250. The fork legs are the same for sr400/sr500/xvs250.

I am very happy with the physical appearnce of White Knight brand Pot Belly Black Stove Paint on my engine. Sort of a satin black. The local lads tell me it is a very good match with the engine black on a Harley Nighttrain and they recommend it in preference to the VHT products. Haven't had the engine hot to try it out yet, but so far it has proved itself very scratch resistant to spanners and stuff. Mick
