Gday all, Great forum you have here.
I've just bought my first bike, a '79 SR500. I'm going over the bike at the moment trying to sort out a few things but there's on that has me a bit perplexed. The bike has clip-ons and they're both correctly alligned in relation to the steering head.
My problem is the left bar hits the tank but the right one doesn't. When the left one hits the stopper still has 3-4mm to go whereas the the right stopper hits and leaves about 1-2mm between right bar and tank.
On a closer looked it seemed (and it could be tiredness from thinking about it too much) the front wheel was pointing slightly to the right. This got me thinking that if my geometry was right, if the steering head was left hand down, and the under bracket was right hand down the forks would pivot slightly leaving the wheel pointing right and the left bar to close for the stopper to work.
My one problem with this theory is i don't know if the steering head is splined onto the under bracket's shaft (i don't want to take it all apart.........yet). Is it interference fit, held in place by the bolt and thats it or is there a spline or a locating key? My trusty cycleserv manual isn't giving up any clues (what's the best repair manual for these bikes).
The other possibility is the underbracket shaft has been twisted. Can anyone else shed any light or offer suggestions please?

The steering stem is a slip fit to the top bracket. Welded to the bottom. Try loosening the bolts on the top and bottom brackets just enough so that the tubes will slip when forced. Kick the front wheel to the left (or strike the wheel against a wall) until it looks straight. Re-check your left and right side clearance. May be that the tubes have just turn a bit in the brackets. Hi, Yes I agree...place the bike on the centre stand (...if it has one)...loosen off the pinch bolts and the top bolt in the centre of the top clamp a bit, not totally loose as the forks can slip down the triple clamps...(...that is not a big problem but a bit if a pain)...then take the front wheel between your legs while facing the front of the bike and twist the bars while holding the front wheel until it all looks straight...someone assisting you may also be useful... This should allow it all to come straight again...then re-tighten the pinch bolts and the centre bolt up again...if you've a torque wrench... ... the two upper bolts and nuts - 11 ft lbs; large centre bolt - 40 ft lbs; lower pinch bolts - 15 ft lbs. Don't overtighten them...you get a feel for how much after a while. If it's a fair way out then you'll probably have to reset your clip-ons again once it's done as well. Of course, the forks may be bent as well...this can result in difficulty in lining it all up, but before getting too complicated, try it and see. The fork stops may also be damaged, allowing the bars to rotate differently side to side and hit...perhaps from a prior accident etc...look at these to see if they're even both sides. They can be built up with weld fairly easily if it's required. Good luck. SR

Hi, One other thing...you'll need to try to turn the wheel while twisting the top triple clamp...I forgot about the clip-ons... they'll twist with the fork legs once loose: ...you can then re-position the bars before you tighten the bolts up...if you've a pair of brackets holding the headlight to the forklegs rather than the standard SR brackets, you'll also need to loosen them before you start as well. The job will be easier with two people. SR

Cheers guys, The one thing missing at the moment is a torque wrench. I'm not a big fan of doing anything without em.
I took the bike down the local tyre store the other day for tyres, chain, sprockets and asked him about it. He mentioned the two parts were interference fit (good news) and he noticed the front forks weren't parrallel (better news). I figure they've gotta take the wheel off any way so i'll get em to sort it out while it's there. Should only take two minutes.
