Hi, The SR's officially sent to Aus. were the E,F G and H models. The E and F models ('78, '79) both had mags and discs front and rear. These had the smaller headlights as well. The G and H models had mags front and rear and the rear mag had a drum brake in it. These had the larger 8" headlight. Years ago I saw an E model in Perth that appeared to be a UK model, these had the wire wheels and a rear drum. The Japanese and UK and some others had wire wheels front and back from the start. These had drum rear brakes, similar to the XT500 ones, but silver. The early ones had the backing plate upside down so they could use the disc brake swing arm that had the caliper anchor on the top of the swingarm. Later ones had the backing plate the other, more conventional way 'round. They are still like that now. As far as I'm aware the Japanese only got the mag wheels on one model...possibly '81. However they now offer the same mags, with a rear drum, as an option from the factory on the SR400's. You can get the wheels in gold or black colours. Retro... SR

Ross My bike has the mag wheels and when i got it was bog stock original the front headlight looks like its about 8 inch across (what size were the 78 -79)so it maybe a mix of early and late parts. There is a picture of my bike in the xs650 gallery if you want to check it out

Hi, Ah OK, so lets look at the rest then: - E/F model seat
- the more I look at it, the strengthening above the pillion mount tubes probably make it an E/F model frame
- black barrel - standard on the G/H model; but certainly could have been painted
- rear wheel - G/H model drum
What's the frame look like on the other side...has it got two holes in the strengthening plate above the swingarm pivot?
Probably has I'd say...the frame for the E or F model is made to have a disc brake master cylinder mounted on the frame for the rear disc operation...
The later model frames, G and on, also have a strengthening plate welded immediately behind the top of the headstem, on the top of the oil tank. The E model doesn't have this mod.
Lastly -
E model prefix = 2J2...
H model prefix = 4F3...
If it is an E model and you wanted to put it back to standard with the rear disc etc...the parts would certainly be around, probably on here somewhere.

Checked th id plate and has 2J2 xxxxxx prefix which matches the number stamped in the frame. However engine no. has 4F3 xxxxxx prefix. The plate welded to the frame above the brake pedal does have the holes in it for a master cyl. to bolt to.
The mystery continues....

Hi, It's got an E model frame with a H model engine in it...no big deal unless you're after a genuine E model with matching numbers or vice-versa; there are subtle design changes to the H model engine that make them a little better than the E model anyway. Sounds fine to me... SR
