Left Side Cover

I have a left side cover for my bike, but can't seem to see how it attaches. The top, I see, hangs on the brackets just like the right side cover. Then, on the left side of the left side cover (say that ten times fast...) there's a projection that looks like it should fit into a grommet, which is what I don't find.

What am I missing (other than some sense and brains)?

I put the Left side cover on, the projection on the left of the cover went into something on the bike with an audible 'click'; and now I can't get it back off! Help?

We found the lock that the side cover clicks into. Never knew it was there...
