I bought a tool kit case on Ebay. A hard plastic case that was advertised as being from an SR500. There have been a few like it. I can't see where or how this mounts in the bike. In the owner's manual, it looks like the tool kit was in a soft case, like on my other bikes.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Mounts under the batterey on the left side. There is a pin on the other end that fits into a socket bolted to the frame. I think only 1 bolt holds the "door" side of it. I'll need to look, and mine isn't mounted to the bike right now. The soft tool case slips inside. Mitch

Thanks, Mitch.
I've never seen one of these in place. So I understande this goes in 'on it's side', and there's a bolt that mounts it permanently on the front side, facing the left of the bike.
Haven't got the soft case, though I now see it would be useful. Shouldn't be hard to substitute something else.

Thanks for the tip! I already have tools, but you can't have too many of those...

I still have the original tool "box" fitted to my 78 model and can confirm that it mounts beneath the battery and air box. You may find that the mounting bracket that holds the back of the tool box (there is a short plastic stud/nipple that sticks out of the rear ot the tool box) onto the RH top rear engine mount is missing, when people remove the engine or undo this mount it inevitible gets left out because people cant work out what the hell it is.
If you are missing this bracket, you may be in trouble as I don't think it is still available from yamaha. Yo many be lucky and through this forum find someone who has remove the tool box and still has the bracket stuck in a box of bit an a shelf.

when doing the work on my magneto and tracing the electrical issues, i pulled my plastic tool case out of the left side of my frame and now can't get the d**n thing back in! lol
I don't really need it anyway, but eventually I'll take it all apart to fit it back in... one day...
