Gents, I ordered a new front trye for my '78. A nice chunky retro looking, hang on in the gravel sort of thing, rather than a semi slick sport bike sort of tyre. I coulda sworn that the manual said the tyres had tubes in them, so that is what I ordered, but I was wrong. I took the wheel off yesterday so I could take it down to the shop for fitting the new tyre. That was easy, so I thought I'd take off the old front tyre myself. That's when I realised it was a tubeless tyre, and the new one requires a tube. As we say here in OZ - bugger............. So here's the question, since the dealer is unlikely to want to take back a tyre I special ordered, can I minimise my losses by putting a tube in? Specifically, does anyone know whether the valve stem on a tube will fit where the tubeless valve stem goes on my '78 model mag wheel? Regards, Mick

You can put tubes into the tires on a SR's cast rims. My 79 SR has had tubes since it was new 27 years ago.

Hey Wotavidone, I've got the factory SR manual in front of me and there's a note in the wheel and tire section that say's "Warning...SR500 aluminum wheels are not designed for use with tubeless tires." You might want to take note of that.

Hi, Yes the rim design where the bead seats is not of the type suitable for tubeless tyres...you need tubes in them. I know that some prople have fitted tubeless tyres to these rims, but you run the risk of them coming away from the bead and deflating...not a good thing...at any speed! You've done the right thing... fit the tube. SR

So I've bought the right tyre. And I've been riding it like I just stole it for the last 7 months on the wrong tyre!!!! Scarey.

PS Current tyre fitted by previous owner.

Hi, Yes you never know what the previous owners do to their bikes do you...nice to not find out the hard way. I have seen others with tubeless tyres on the SR's as well, but the rim still isn't right...luck of the draw I guess... I bought an XT off a guy who said that he'd just done the top end and I should re-check the head torques...forgot to tell me he'd left the bolt that attaches the cam sprocket to the cam finger tight...I found out later when it came off..what a mess. He also used to work on helicopters with me...after that happened I double checked everything he did! SR

Have fitted a new back tyre as well now. Scored a Dunlop K70 for 100 bucks. Identical tread pattern to front tyre. Stands 2 whole inches higher than old tyre. Gearing now excellent. Very long legged, which is the way I like my bikes and my babes. Mick

Hello.
Speaking of tires. How wide back tire can I fit on my '78 stock SR? Any advice?
Have seen SR's without the black trimming. How to remove it? Have compressor......sandblasting would maybe be to hard on the surface?
My SR has no tube in the back tire either. Haven't driven it one single mile with it though.
