Rode to UNM in ABQ and back to Santa Fe today (120+ mi roundtrip). Bike rode fine. Thanks all for support and info.
Picked up a cotter pin at a dealer in ABQ, but it was way too thick. I split it, and used it until I got back to SMR Motorcycles in Santa Fe. The guy went right to a drawer and pulled out an appropriate pin. Wouldn't take money for it.
Bike is riding pretty well. I still get nervous over 70 mph on the interstate, so I ride at my own pace. Have discovered earplugs make the bike go faster! ;D Well, they let me drive faster.
The cable came undone from the tach. Screwed it back when I got home. Is LocTite or similar appropriate here?
Rodentrancher, let us know when your bike is back to running. Maybe I can see it some time after class, or my occasional flight shift at Med Flight.

Hi, Good that all is now fine...earplugs are good for a number of reasons...least of all it saves your hearing...especially on a loud bike. There also pins that are spring loaded that you can push into the hole and around the nut. These are infinitely re-usable...up to you. Just tighten both of the cable ends moderately with a pair of long nose pliers...that'll do fine. SR
