On the right end of the front wheel shaft/spindle there's a hole. Just a hole. It looks like there ought to be something there. What's it for? Thanks!

Small hole through the front axle, near the end? That's where you put a cotter key to keep the axle nut from loosening and backing out. You should have one of these in both axles.

Hi,
Yes as rodentrancher said one is for the pin and nut. The hole in the other end of the axle is for you to hold the axle still as you screw the nut on and off or to put something like the end of a screwdriver or similar through so you can remove the axle from the forks when removing the wheel...

Actually, I meant the Left end (the *other* Right as my climbing partner used to say on belay). I was just a little concerned when I suddenly noticed for the first time a hole with nothing in it.
