Not sure if this is the correct forum or if it should go under engine stuff. I've been getting a lot of vibration from the engine on my SR500 road racer and have found a couple of things that I need to check out.
One of the nuts on the rear engine mounting bolt was loose and when I tried to torque it up, the bolt sheared and when I looked at the bolt, it seemed to have been partially sheared for some time. Has anyone ever had this happen to them before? The bolt is 130mm long and 10mm diameter.
The other thing is the top engine mounting seems to be missing. There is no bracket on the frame any more and the top of the engine is not fixed to the frame in any way. I've heard that engine head bolts can break when the top frame tube flexes when cornering hard and put a lot of stress on the head. Maybe this is why a previous owner removed it. Is the top mount essential or redundant? Should I try to make a new top mount or is it safe to leave it, bearing in mind I am racing the bike.

Hi, Yes there should definitely be an engine mount at the top. It's a tubular bracket that leads from the mount on the head to the frame. That should be there and it is quite possible to transfer vibration elsewhere if it is not. Try the wreckers for the right thing. Fitting it may also make the bike handle a little better as well? SR

I can get hold of the part that bolts to the motor, but I will need someone to weld a bracket on the frame. I needed confirmation that this was an important mount to have and justify the effort and you've confirmed that!

Hi, No worries...the mounts on the frame are situated to the rear of the mounts on the engine...if you give me your e-mail I'll send you a couple of pics of the mounts on my H model frame if you want them. SR
