Hey guys: Looking to start getting the wheels together for my race bike. I'v got the hubs (even found a NOS xt500 rear hub) and thinking of going with a 2.5x18 rear and 2.15x18 front. Should I look for shouldered rims, or can I run non-shouldered? What's the difference (I've assumed shouldered allows you to run tubeless tires?). Thanks!

Gary, Hi again...
None of the alloy spoked rims are suitable for tubeless tyres...except for the BMW rims and they have perimiter mounted spokes that go into the outside side of the rim. This is mainly due to the fact that you'd have a real hard time keeping the air in and they aren't the type of rim that seals on the bead...
Best alloy rims in my books are the Excel rims by Takasago.

Thanks Stew. Tubes it is. Excel was just what I had in mind. Should I go with shouldered Excels or standard (like is typical on moto bikes)? Do the widths seem like they are workable, or should I go wider (3x18 rear, 2.5x18 front)? Thanks!

Hi, Rim styles can is a bit of a personal choice sort of thing. On the new cafe racer I am putting a WM2 on the front and a WM3 on the rear...both 18"s. Non-flanged in my case...looks 'lighter'... not 'classic' but lighter. I have flanged rims on all of my race bikes as well.. I note that the Japanese are putting 17" rims on their bikes a lot of the time now...possibly a better road tyre choice, but they 'look' a little small to me??? Not my choice... I guess that you really don't want to go to too wide on the rear tyre...too wide a front and it will steer more slowly...90 or 100 front and a 120 rear??? At the moment my tyre choice for race tyres (..on the Honda currently and soon the DCM) would be Avon race tyres...Super Venom's...AM18's...on the rear...can't recall model number of the front...possibly the same...quite expensive but worth it...once warmed up they grip extremely well. I have tried to get narrow 18" slicks for the DCM but can't find any...there are some competition spec Dunlops as well... The race Avon's are not much good on the road though...I gave one a go on the front of the black cafe racer...it only started working after some 'forceful' riding through the Adelaide Hills ...in town it was slipping all over the place...not confidence inspiring! Any problem with going to a WM5 (3") rear rim width (rubbing, etc.)?
