Welcome! Not completely sure, but I think the offroad counterparts to the SR, the TT and XT500's early models had drum brakes on the front. Should work on the SR. Gary Hopwheels

Early Yamaha 650, Honda 450 are most often used. Would require some machining and fab work to make fit. Ed

Hi, I've fitted a Suzy GT750J (550) 4LS drum to one of mine. Others have done so as well. It looks really stylish and suits the cafe racer image perfectly...there are other 4 leaders available as well, some new. The Suzy brakes are heavy, but they look great...
...another alternative might be the large Yamaha TR/TD/TZ 4LS front drum. These are much harder to get and have no place for a speedo drive for a road bike, but they look great and are a Yamaha drum...electronic speedo's assist here...they also work very well on a four stroke bike...and are probably lighter than the Suzy drum...
The XS1 front drum also looks really good...hard to find also...
....however the easiest way is to source a genuine SR front drum...possibly off the net or just enquire around. Check around some of the SR's on the net and you'll see this brake....These brakes were on the SR's for quite a number of years so ther'd be heaps around and they look a lot like the original XS 650 front drum. They work much better than the older drum however, some things do improve with time...
The SR drum has a scoop on one side and the air outlet holes on the other, as did the XS's. Unlike the XS drum however, you'll need to file/drill the vents open in the scoop, and drill the exit holes on the other side of the drum much larger to make them work. They are there more for looks and style than use. None of this is a difficult process however.
One benefit of fitting the SR drum is that it would go straight on with no modification....the XS drum requires some fabrication for a anchor point as well...
You're right drums do look a lot better ....

Haven't looked at the forum for a while so this reply is fairly late coming.... anyway if you are still wanting a drum brake i have a original SR from a late model bike that looks ever bit goods! also have new spokes to suit, i brought it back from Japan but have a custom build up on the go so wont use the drum and can get another. If interested let me know...... they polish up very nice!
