Hi.
Try taking the cable off the bike to see if it has a lot of 'drag' on the inner...that can cause problems...also there can be a problem with rust on the internals of the tacho (drag cup) if it has been sitting for a long time.
Not a huge amount that you can do there, rustwise, unless you have the instrument disassembled and serviced...not many places will do that.
If necessary there are certainly replacement tacho's about...the later SR's have white faced instruments though.
Deusexmachina in Aus can supply Daytona stuff as well...I recently bought a small sized aftermarket speedo for under $80 Aus...I'm sure they can get original stuff as well.

THANKS FOR THE REPLY STEW, BUT I'M SURE IT'S IN THE GUAGE,THE CABLE WAS ALREADY LUBED AND IN GOOD CONDITION AND THE DRIVE SHOWS NO WEAKNESS.I'LL CONTUNUE TO GIVE IT A LITTLE LUBE AND W/ SOME TIME HOPEFULLY IT WILL LOOSEN UP. IF NOT I'LL OPEN IT UP,BIG PAIN IN THE BUTT,I'VE DONE IT BEFORE.NOT LOOKING TO SPEND TOO MUCH AT THIS TIME AS I'M A LITTLE OVER BUDGET AND WAITING ON TAGS,BUT VERY HAPPY WITH THE BIKE AT THIS MOMENT.THE MOTOR LOOKS AND RUNS CHERRY,THE REST OF THE BIKE BEEN CLEANED UP AND WHEN I GET A FEW MILES ON IT I'LL NEED TO DECIDE WHAT DIRECTION TO GO WITH HER BUT I HAVE A FEELING SHE'LL BE AROUND FOR A WHILE,BOB

I just fired up my XS650 today for the first time this spring and *both* the speedo and tach are acting as you describe. It was in the back bedroom over the winter, not in a damp place or anything.

Ok, ofter about 60 miles my speedometer is working "pretty good", still a little slow. The tach is much slower, but I have to assume that time will bring it around. Topdog - yes, I had the bike last fall, both gauges were fine, and it spent the winter in my back bedroom so it didn't even get cold. I did have the gauges off for a while and sitting on their faces, I was wondering if maybe that let the pivot lift off the seat and corrode a bit? Anyway, things are improving. miker

Hi there Miker,
I read somewhere that you should not get any oil or grease into the gauges. If there was some oil where the cables connect and you stored them on their faces that oil could have seeped into the gauges. I had a similar problem when I tried to pull my Tacho appart to fix a loose screw, the screw is still floating arround inside the face, (I couldn't get the glass out!). When I reinstalled the tacho it ran slow for a while but soon corrected itself. You might be able to clean the oil from inside, if that is the problem, with cotton buds.
Good luck, Mikec.

Both speedo and tach are now ok, after about 150 miles. I'll remember that on the oil/grease, thanks!
