Hi, I'm still a relatively new member and SR500 owner could use some advice...
I bought my stock 78 Thumper last June complete with dry rotted tires. I figured I'd ride on those tires until they would no longer hold air, and that day has come. I have the original spec.s for the tires from the owner's manual and I understand they use inner-tubes.
3.50S-19-4PR (front) 4.00S-18-4PR (rear)
Can anyone recommend a good brand of tire to buy and is there anything special I should know? Are the sizes still correct? I ride mostly in the city. Thanks for your help!

I believe those sizes are accurate. I went with Bridgestone Accolades on my '78 stocker, 'cause they had a more retro standard roadster appearance and fit the stock look of my bike. By '79 has Dunlop K591's. I've heard Metzlers and Avon (?)are good choices, and they're probably more choices available as well. Hope this helps. Gary Hopwheels

Thanks for the info Hopwheels. Can't find the same sizes in the Bridgestones yet but will keep looking. CB

For the road I use Bridgestone BT45's.
Excellent tyres dry or wet, and they grip well for quick cornering as well.

I've had good luck with Bridgestone "Spitfires" on both my SR and (shhh) Kaw GPz550. Not quite as grippy, but good all rounder and reasonably priced.

+1 on the Bridgestones, Spitfires or BT45's. If you do a little sport riding now and again go with the BT45's. Sizes that will fit the SR are 100/90-19 front and 110/90-18 rear.

wow, thanks for all of the recommendations - it's hard to decide which ones to buy. i can get a really good price on the accolades right now... and i have since found out that the spitfires are considered the stock replacements.

It's good to see someone giving this the consideration it deserves. Tyre choice is the number one life/death equipment choice you can make. You didn't mention whether you are a fair weather rider only. I like Metzlers. They seem to provide the most progressive release (and predicability) on a wet road of the tyres I've used, without sacrificing too much longevity. Whatever you get, ensure that is new stock - tyre compound goes off with age, and stick with the standard sizes for your bike. Consider what you want from your bike. I'm currently running a big Bridgestone BT45 140/80 on the back on a 3 1/2 inch rim with a Metzler 110/90 on the front (standard rim size). The combination corners brilliantly under accelleration in tight corners, and brakes great, but tends to flop into corners at intersection speeds and wriggles around way too much where the road is grooved from the traffic. This wheel/tyre combination might be good on the track, but is not comfy on the roads, particularly when wet. At tyre change time (coming soon) I'll be putting standard wheels and tyres on my SRX6. Incidentally, I didn't make the bike like that. It was previously someone elses track toy. I'll be happily swapping the funky look of the bike for better general handling. This has been an interesting experience, but no thanks in the long term. Hey the BT45 is good. It's the size that's the problem here.

I had to do the same thing when I picked up my SR this summer. Something about 26 yr old tired turne me off... Anywasy I went with the Metzlers and they have worked well. When it gets in the tripple digits up here they grip great.

Just bought mine last week. I figured the old ones needed the flick so down the shop i went. I ended up getting a Bridgestone BT45 on the front and a Bridgestone spitfire on the rear. This was suggested to me as a good combination of sticky front and long wearing rear at an affordable price. So far so good. (Distance travelled so far 70km's)
