Anyone know if the front disc brake rotors from the FZR600 will bolt up to a 1977 XS650 front wheel? I think I can get my hands on these cheaper than drilling and chamfering XS or SR rotors. Bolt pattern and size looks close. Anyone with experience try this? Thanks! Gary Hopwheels

Well, here's the update on this idea... FZR400 and 600 will bolt right on to the XS650 wheel I have. I even discovered, lurking underneath the plastic dust cover, the necessary bolt holes to receive the second disc. Pretty cool. It seems the problem is in aligning the XS or SR calipers with the FZR discs, as what I'm learning is that they do not protrude or offset from the wheel as far as the stockers. Its either shimming OUT the discs (doesn;t sound easy or inexpensive) or shimming IN the stock calipers with some washers on the mounts.
However, if FZR calipers will bolt onto the '77 XS650 forks I have, then all will be ok, as I think those calipers will then line right up with the FZR discs. Which all sounds too good to be true.
I'm going this direction because drilling and chamferring the stock SR (and I picked up an XS) discs are more expensive (at least where I live) than just buying the used, but good, FZR discs. Whodathunkit?
So now the question is, do '89 or '90 FZR400 or 600 calipers bolt right on to '77 XS650 (or SR500) fork caliper mounts?
The mongrel is only becoming more of a mongrel at this point it seems!

The following website srx6blk.hp.infoseek.co.jp/SR/SR-Index.htmis the best that I have found to explain floating disk conversions (click on the 298 and 320 part) It is in Japanese but translates OK with the babelfish website: babel.altavista.com/tr?Note: In the Japanese website they use XJ400 disks. If this model is unavailable, Yamaha TRX850 front disks are also 298 mm in diameter and have the same bolt pattern. The FZR 320mm diameter disks require a caliper adapting bracket to fit up to the SR forks and a spacer behind the disk for the caliper spoke clearance. Personally I am not happy with this arrangement as the disks rotor is centered only by the mounting bolts and not the shoulder of the hub as the factory intended. I would be interested in other people's views and opinions from an engineering perspective as my anxiety may be unfounded. Mark B
