Afternoon all : Well, based on the other thread about XS650 fronts and rears, I went with a XT500 rear, with drum brake. Fortunately, (hopefully its fortunate!) it also has the brake armiture and brackets along with it. I was going to get the frame and swing arm out to be blasted and powder coated, but realized that this rear wheel/drum brake conversion may need some welded tabs added and/or removed to work properly. So... A) Nope, done this conversion, you're safe to proceed to powder coat the frame and swing arm... or, B) STOP! You're wasting your money to do it now, 'cause you're going to want to weld this thingy here and remove this with a grinder there, etc. Thanks for any feedback (and if anyone has literally done this conversion, I'd love, and be eternally grateful, for pics of the setup!) NEXT SUBJECT... I've noticed photos of the XS650 showing the rotor on the opposite side as the stock SR. Is this a problem to literally flop the wheel to the other side, or is the way the rim is laced up corrolated to the direction of wheel rotation? Much thanks! Gary Hopwheels

Hi again,
The only thing not reversible is the direction of the front tyre. Drums can be a different matter.
I have several pics of XT wheels in SR's if you're interested. I can email them to you.
I identified the rear drum with a cush drive from the DCM. It's from a Yam TX500 apparently...last owner let me know. Nice looking drum.
My recommendation is don't paint anything 'till it's done.

I would love to see pics of the rear drum conversion on an SR via email. Please email them to ghopkins@hopwheels.com. Thanks! Gary Hopwheels

Thanks Stew. Got the pics. Much appreciated! Probably more questions to follow. I'll try and post pics this weekend, as the wheels I was waiting on have arrived, and I'm anxious to figure out the mechanism for making the rear drum work on the SR, so I can have any frame tabs, etc. added/modified that may need to be. Looks pretty straight forward, but there is a mounting point for the drum stabilizer bar that appears to be a tab on the bottom of the swing arm on the XT, that isn't on the SR. Is this the main frame modification that needs to be accomplished? Other than that, it appears that the actuator cable/armiture, bracket and spring mechanism is obviously different. But those are parts that can be ordered for the XT and used on the SR if I'm not mistaken. Or perhaps some light fabrication? Thanks again. Gary Hopwheels

Hi Gary, As I think that I said in the e-mail, the swing arm and the brake pedal pivot mechanism is different between the drum brake models and the disc models.
Thinking about it, it may be simpler to get the swing arm and pivot mechanism from a rear drum brake model.

I did it again. I hit some key and away the message goes...prematurely...oh well.
Where was I....the mag wheel or wire wheel drum model swing arm would do. Should be plenty around in the US. Saves modifying the original disc swing arm as well.
The XT brake rod setup was a little different to the SR's as well.

Thanks Stew! So, it appears that the only mod to the SR frame, woud be to the swing arm to accomodate the rear drum. Cool. Think that means the main frame is going out for powder coat (I need some work space!). It would be great to find a swing arm that came from a drum model (assuming from a rear drum SR, right?). That'll be plan A. Would an XT500 swing arm fit? Thanks for all the help btw.
The XT rear wheel is literally all the way apart. It was in worse shape than the eBay pics (practially always true!), but it was a deal. Hub, spokes, wheel all in various stages of clean up/polishing. I'll have the wheel re-laced after rebuilding the rest of it. Man every aspect of this is getting complex!! Gary Hopwheels

Not sure about the XT swingarm..possibly not...however I could be mistaken.
If you do a good job straight up then it's worth it in the end.
Dean's SR, the one with the alloy Manx tank, had the front and rear hubs powdercoated black, I think. Looked really clean and neat...easy to clean as well.

I checked out an exploded view on the XT swing arm, looks like a no go. I decided to simply have my local weld shop add the stabilizer arm tab onto the right side bottom of the swing arm I have. They're also cutting off some excess bits on the frame and swing arm like the center stand mounts, side cover tabs, buddy peg arms [other than the lower portion of right buddy peg for brake and exhaust mounts], rear disc brake mechanism mounts/guides on swing arm, and a few other bits. I'm pretty excited about it. It's somewhat following the pics of the yellow SR you sent me Stew. I'm thinking about having aluminum side covers fabricated that more closely hug the frame shape, and not "bubble out" so much. The rectifier and batt box (may go to batt eliminator) on the left side may require some convex curve in the side cover, but I'm hoping I can relocate a couple of items and keep it really flat and simple. Yes not a bad idea. I use a capacitor to get rid of the battery on the CR. I have also got rid of the battery box and placed all of the electronic bits on an alloy plate that bolts up the the holes through the dside cover mount tabs.
Very neat and tidy; still gets plenty of cooling air as well.
Keep going.
