G'day to all,
I have read of people fitting dual discs to the front using amongst other bits some XS1100 parts. Can anyone tell me exactly what is needed in the way of spare parts to convert the standard single alloy wheel setup to duals? With both me and the misses on it takes a fistfull to stop it at the moment.
Stew, I am in Canberra at the moment on a contract job, bloody cold and wet at present but took a drive ( no bike, bugger!!) up to the ranges to the south. They seem like a great place to ride through and can understand why all the motels etc have motorcyclists welcome signs out the front.
Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian,
Yep pretty cold at the moment, snowed here today as well...may snow tomorrow too.
It's keeping me out of my shed. I really need to finish filing my footpeg mount plates...oh well, next weekend I guess.
The twin disc setup is fairly easy. The disc and mount bolts you get is from another SR..straightforward. I actually machined one from a Yam 500 twin down..more trouble than it's worth by the way.
The caliper I got from an older XS250 twin cylinder Yam. Bolts straight onto the opposite side. Mirror identical.
Brake hoses are plentiful at the wreckers. I originally used a standard one from the rear of an SR. The lines are all standard type fittings, so look around for the perfect one...the old SR ones are probably getting a bit long in the tooth now. Better from a newer sport bike etc.
The master cylinder I used was from an XS750 as I recall, again wreckers have some good stuff.
One thing to consider is that although the brakes are a lot stronger, there is a bit of an issue with tank slapping due to the increased unsprung mass...not always a problem, but if you do push it in the corners a bit perhaps think about installing a steering damper. Just something I've found.
All round the SR's a great bike, I 'm really glad to have 'em out in the shed.

You can also use front brake parts from a Yamaha XS650 twin. The 650 has the same brakes as the SR except that it has a right side brake unlike the SR, which is on the left. So you can take the whole assembly and bolt it on. My 1979 SR has a cast wheel with the holes for a right side rotor already drilled and the right fork-leg already has the mounting tabs for a right side caliper. I don't know if SR's with spoked wheels or newer models came like that from the factory like mine did.

Hi, Yes there would other Yams that you could use the bits from as well.
The '79 650 would be one you could use , XS1100 etc. We didn't get the last of the 650's here in Aus. They'd changed to the Specials by then...shame, they looked like a nice bike....
The 1100 discs are a fair amount thicker than the SR ones and heavier. Something to be avoided for the reasons stated above.
All of the mag wheeled earlier SR's came ready for twin discs, as did the forks. The earlier wire wheels may have as well I think? Akira?

Thanks Stew and Canucksr,
I am 1200k away from the bikes at present and freezing here in Stew's domain. I couldn't remember seeing the bolt holes for the right disc on the wheel hub but after looking at the exploded version on partsfish.com maybe I was seeing the plug type thing covering them. I will have a close look when I get back.
Stew you state the caliper from an XS250 will fit, do you know if the disc rotor from an XS250 will fit also as I can get one of those easy enough.
I presume the different master cylinder is to pump enough fluid to work the two calipers rather than just the standard one, so any master which worked a dual setup should be OK. Yes, No, Maybe?
Thanks for your help,
Brian

Brian, Hi, yep nice and cool here at the moment alright. The weekends are usually OK though. Where are you from?
I'm working on my Camier 500 at the moment, making pegs and mounting plates for them. Good fun. If you get time perhaps you could check out the SR's while you're here. (Mob - 0419 164 941)
The 250 disc question I'm not so sure about. Perhaps they are? Sometimes the style and size of the lightening holes in the centre will vary from model to model...
SR discs are relatively easy to come by though...try the Melb or Adelaide wreckers. Actually Joe's M/C's here in Canberra (Fyshwick) can possibly help out with the lot.
The disc mounting holes in the wheel are covered by a black plastic plate...I guess you'd call it that... it is easily removed.
Yes, I guess that any twin disc master cylinder should do the trick. I tend to try to stick with Yam stuff on Yams for my own reasons...but it doesn't really matter.
