I am currently running a 17 tooth counter shaft sprocket and a stock 44 tooth rear. I am reving @ 5k at highway speed. I would like to knock that down closer to 4k. I am fitting a xs650 rear and would like to get the optimum ratio. Any help? Also was wondering what you all thought about alluminium vs. steel rear sprockets. How low can you go regarding # of teeth on the counter shaft sprocket? Thanks, Steve

I have a 17 tooth on the front and a 44on the rear also and 4000 rpms = 70 mph . You didn't say what your highway speed is but my calculation would be 87 mph at 5000 rpm .
The SR may not pull higher gearing unless you have done some engine mods. I have a 10 to 1 piston, 36mm carb kit and modified stock exhaust and don't think it would respond well to higher gearing.

Hi, I run a 525 chain on my black SR cafe racer and I have 17/34 gearing on it. It is admittedly certainly a bit lighter than a standard SR and it has a Ducati SS fairing on it to get down behind.
It seems to rev impossibly low at about 120k's or so, however I have never actually really looked at the tacho at those speeds.
At the top end that's another story. It revs at 6,500 at 185 KMH, but won't really pull any more past that normally......runs into a wall....perhaps down a steep hill, still I haven't done that.
I have had the speed checked on numerous occasions and it's genuine alright.
It has an 88.5mm Wiseco piston, 38mm Mikuni from a TZ 350, Tingate pipe and so on. Otherwise it's a standard engine. Hopefully my H model will totally eclipse this one...we'll see, lots of modifications going into that bike....time will tell I guess.

Hey Throttletwister, I see you are running 10:1 piston. Any dramas with pinging etc? What octane fuel? I have 10:1 wiseco, very quiet ( presumably restricted ) after market muffler and stock 34mm Mikuni. Currently 15 front 42 rear. Looking at a 17 tooth front, which would not be far away from your gearing. Currently get 95 km/hr (about 59 mph) at 5000 rpm. Love to see 60 mph at 4000. Would cruise all day, and there's always 4th gear if I need more grunt. Regards Mick
