I'm thinking about putting on a wider rear wheel and tyre. I know there are pro's and cons with this and the need for another swingarm or modify existing. I also realise that the primary and cover etc will need to be modified to keep chain straight, but has anyone done it? or have any info on doing it ? I'm currently running alloy spoked wheels and drums F&R. Previous owner ditched the discs.

Hallo Swordfish, 150mm width is max with the tyre in centre , 160mm with off centre al with original swingarm. if you want more you will have to make some major changes. with a jackshaft the sky is the limit.
my rear is a 165/80R15 in centre with the engine 9mm to the left and no swingarm.

Thanks sjef, you say 160mm off centre al, what do you mean al ? You have 165/80R15 with no swingarm, how do you not have a swingarm? Any photos, Engine 9mm to the left, would this not affect balance. How does the bike handle compared to original.

Hallo Swordfish,
off centre means that the centreline from the rearwheel is not in line with the centerline from the frame. the width of the reartire is also limited by one of the tubes at the leftside. this tube prevents you from running the chain more to the left.
No swingarm means hardtailed frame the 9mm engine offset doesnot affect the balance of this bike it is a totally different ride . a pic is here:http://www.yamaha-xt500.co.uk/album_pic.php?pic_id=18 at the moment it is taken apart again for finishing purposes,
if you stick to the original frame and swingarm you will hardly notice a difference, except maybe in cornering.this assuming you keep everything in centre, you will notice offcentre more the larger the offcentre is.
