Picked up a 1980 SR500. Looks like some frame damage to steering pivot (have not checked but probably caster is off). Do not see any damage to forks or steering head. I'd guess pivot area where the frame tubes head downward is bent rearward. Questions: is repair a viable option? Are frames available? Will a TT or XT500 frame work?

Hi Admath: You can certainly build up a bike by dropping your motor into the TT or XT frames, but as these are off road frames there are some differences that may have you doing some fab work or searching for some bits. The off road bikes use high mounted exhaust etc... Points ignitions in the off road bikes, electronic in the SR. Wiring etc... to swap or sort out. Doing frame work can be precarious and best left to the pro's unless you have experience in this field. Although finding wrecked SR's in my part of the world is a little rare, anything can be had if you look hard enough! I might look for the SR frame first and then expand the search if that doesn't pan out. Good luck and talk to you soon, G Man  |

Hi Admath,
do not know where you live? but i have one secondhandframe 1981 2j4 and 3 or 4 as good as new 1998 1jn frames (0KM/Mls )here,(Netherlands)Frames are no problem in europe anyway. Frames from xt tt are different altough the engine will fitt. I have had the same situation with a xt500 ,found me a frame with rear-damage ,cut the both apart and welded the 2 good parts together,et voila: one new frame(welding was done by a professional certified welder)
so repair is an option but you have to know what you are doing

Thanks to all for your replies. Happened to find a SR500 frame 5 miles down the road for $50 - couldn't pass it up.
