Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself, But.......
I went for my first decent ride yesterday morning, about an eighty mile loop from my house north of Prescott, south on SR89 to Kirkland Junction, back through Skull Valley to Prescott to home.
The weather was clear the temp about 70. Perfect! I didnt want it to end.
Has anyone toured on an SR? I would imagine it would leave some lasting memories.
I was thinking: small windshield, toolkit and not much more than a credit card.
I wonder (wander!)?

I took a 280 mile trip on mine once and I just about vibrated my butt off by mile 150. Not the best touring rig out there, but it's all a state of mind - if you want to do it you'll enjoy it. Hell, I went 4000 miles on a Harley sportster and loved every minute of it

G'day. I've done a couple of long trips on my H model. And numerous shorter trips as well... One was about 650 miles over 2 days, when I first picked the bike up from my mate...from that trip I learned about the virtue of a small sheep skin cover on the seat for touring; your backside thanks you!...the SR's seat isn't amazing comfy on a long trip...the other thing was never undertake a long ride with standard SR bars! Use flat bars, low touring bars...anything but standard bars... The other long trip I did was to the World Supers at Phillip Island...about 460 miles each way. Nice ride each way, stright thru....the old sheep skin helped again and the SR's sits beautifully at 100/110 KMH (60- 70 mph)...low bars for that one as well...oh yes, it is good to have rearsets as well...much more comfortable... I've even done a bit of shorter distance touring on the black cafe racer....not totally advisable... We got pulled over for speeding once while I was on the cafe racer, it was belting down rain at the time...my leathers were like a red chamois...my 'mate' who was also on a very loud Tingate-pipe'd SR, tried to talk the police officer into letting us go. (..he liked to 'reason' with people...) I looked in the direction of the police officer and said that as he was standing in the pouring rain talking to us in his (soaked) short sleeved shirt he probably wasn't in any mood to let us off...the police officer who'd heard what I said agreed and said..."I'd listen to your mate if I were you" ... both of our bikes were to say the least of questionable legality...after handing us our tickets, the police officer stood there while we started our bikes (...luckily both bikes started at near idle...) and he watched us ride off (...as quietly as possible...) into the downpour....heh, heh... Perhaps I strayed off the topic a little there... SR

Tradrocket, I know what you mean about 'state of mind'. I had a 91 Sportster that I road all over the mid-west. I remember rideing to Stugis from Omaha (about six hundred miles) and seeing guys in pick-up trucks towing dressers. Most of them would tell me that there is no way they would ride a Sportster that far. Apperently they would'nt ride a dresser that far either!
Thanks StewRoss for the tips. I'll start looking for a sheepskin. So the flat bars and rear sets are the way to go? I love the look but have wondered how comfterble they would be. I'll have to try it.
I'm retireing in less than a year and after that I'm thinking I do'nt care how long it takes to get from here to there so maybe I'll ride till I get numb and take a rest. Ha!

Hi, I agree, there no real hurry, so the SR does quite nicely...
It sits on a decent speed all day without flinching. You get about 20km to the tank (120 miles or so)...time enough to stop and rest the rear end.
Rear sets are worth it as they allow you to be slightly stretched out as you ride...normal pegs can get a bit uncomfortable after a while...

There's a guy out there who has done all kinds of Iron Butt rallies on an SR500. I think he's put well over 120k on his.

Maybe bar "snake" weighted inserts, or bar ends might help as well for bar vibrations?

It's a flexible weight that goes inside the bar to reduce vibrations. Some guys have recommended them on the Suzuki SV site I frequent. (V-Twins vibrate at the grips a lot as well). Found here: www.barsnake.com/
