My old friend Charlie bought a 1978 SR 500 when they first came out. He put 30,000 miles on it then the Magneto ( he thought) went kaput. It was parked in his garage next to his beloved Mini till last week when I bought it and dragged it home to be parked in my garage next to my Sprite. Now I want to get it ridable. I Really don't want it parked collecting dust for another twenty four years. It was last ridden in '84.
So, I am experienced with English cars: have had them for over 25 years and rebuilt motors, carbs, brakes, front ends, interiors, etc. But all the motorcycles I have had through the years were new bikes, requiring just riding, no rebuilding or tinkering. So I am confident in working on the SRs brakes, carb, forks, and most mechanical things other than the Ignition system, and I am pretty clueless about that. I have been reading the forum for two weeks and have learned alot. Some of you guys are increadably knowledgeable about these bikes. Now I know some of you are thinking, this guy has had English cars for years and dealt with the Prince of Darkness and he can't figure out a simple one cylinder motorcyle? He must be Nuts! Well, maybe, just not that good with electrics and have had very few problems with Lucas in my cars over the years. Honestly.
So I am hoping someone can steer me along on what I need to do to find out where my missing spark is and what to do about it. Where should I start, what should my first steps be?
25 years ago I had an 81 Honda 500 big thumper and really enjoyed that bike so I am looking forward to getting this one on the road. It looks like a fun ride, thanks in advance for some help.
