i started hearing a ticking noise from the engine after it gets warmed up. there is enough oil in it. and the timing is ok i guess. it idles fine, revs good, no loss in power any ideas?

Loose valve adjuster maybe? Could also be a loose cam chain slapping inside the motor.

I also have a noise coming from my top end. Don't think its valve adjustment. First thing to do is check valve lash adjustment. .004 intake .006 exhaust. I am going to check mine tonight, however i have a bad feeling my noise is loose piston pin, as the noise is more of a knock than a tick. Ed

A ticking noise could be the valve adjustment, perhaps cam chain wear?......has it got a high comp piston...slight valve to piston or piston to head clearance problems?
I set one XT engine up with close clearances between the valves and the piston...I overreved it off a start (missed a gear) and she wouldn't run anymore...bent the exhaust valve slightly...it looked OK until you poured petrol into the upturned head...the fuel flowed straight out the exhaust port...
As for knocking noises...
I had an XT that the cam sprocket came loose on after the previous owner had left the retaining bolt loose. This gave a ticking/tapping sound, followed by the head of the exhaust valve breaking off and destroying the piston...the valve timing was shifting as the bolt loosened, there was an elongated hole for the retaining dowel...messy.
That one had a high comp piston as well......(the previous owner said that it'd be worth re-torquing the head down when I bought it off him; didn't mention he'd probably left half of the rest of the bolts loose as well...he worked on helicopters with me...I checked his work on the aircraft very closely after that!)...
Although I haven't experienced it...it appears there have been problems with the little end of the con rod wearing...this perhaps stems from never or rarely changing the oil? I replaced a rod in one of mine as a precaution after 100,000 kms...there was nothing wrong with it when I got it out...
I have also seen problems with the main bearings on one SR...again poor oil changing habits or leaving the bike sit for years without turning it over...
Some places to look...hope that helps...

this may not be helpful at all, but remember this is an aircooled single - they make alot more noise than a liquid cooled anything. Took me a long time to get used to my Harley and my SR after years of a smooth V4 Magna.
first thing I checked on mine was Cam chain tension and then adjust your valves. Do those two thing, but if this doesn't help post back...
