Hello to all! yesterday I purchased a '81 SR500, nice condition with just 12000 miles. All stock except flatter bars and turn signal have been taken off. This looks like a great site with loads of usefull info. I have two ?s to get started and this may have already been covered in detail. 1st- of the manuals available which is the best? 2nd I am going to change the oil; what is the proper oil for this bike and are there any unusal procedures I should know about as this is the first dry sump single I have owned. I will post a photo soon. Thanks! chris

Welcome! I'l let the others tell ya about the oil - I know some but I used their info to get it done on my bike. As far as the manuals go I have the Clymer (red book with a guy doin' a wheelie on the cover) Good luck with the bike -be careful though, Sr's are the most addictive thing you don't have to inject!

Hi Chris, Welcome...I'm sure you'll love the bike...I use the Clymer manual...but there are others. I use Valvoline XLD Premium oil, and I change it regularly. Filter change every second one. Only check the oil level after it is warmed up...leave for a short while then have a look... SR

Me too Valvoline XLD Premium. Very cheap in the local Autopro store, $20 for 5 litres, so I can afford to do it frequently. My manual says every 3000km, with filter every second oil change. This is what I do, except if its say 2000 km since the last oil change, and I'm going to go on a longish ride or flog it on a really hot day, its cheap enough that I can change the oil early, so the bike never has to work really hard on old oil. Will this ensure good engine life? No idea, I'll let you know in a decade or so. Mick

You can download a copy of the manual for personal use at the URL below. There are also parts lists, wiring diagrams etc. Because it's the first oil change, I would check all of the filters to make sure everything's clean, all the info is in the manual. There's a link on the page to a photo gallery of loads of XTs SRs TTs in all guises, worth a look. Cheers. John. www.oldgitsuk.dsl.pipex.com/Thumperinfo.htm
