Unless you want to play around a bit with changing sprockets etc. probably go for a 530, non O ring type. There can be clearance problems with an O ring chain at the front on the inside. Especially if you've a 17 tooth on the front.
A 520 setup will give you a weight saving (if you are interested in that) and you can use XT front sprockets (GENUINE) which are 520 width. Can't remember about the sprocket fit on the rear. It won't be a real problem in any case. I like genuine sprockets if I can get them due to the out of round problems that you can get with aftermarket ones; this can trash chains pretty quickly...it's up to you.
For a non O ring chain get a good quality one, such as DID etc. Use a heavy duty one as well. I used a 520 MX chain on my last one. Expensive but if you look after them and they'll last for ages. Besides a gold chain is nice to look at as well.

And make sure you go to Johnson and Wood off of Lankershim and Burbank unless you've already found a good place closer to you - those guys are great. They are old model Japanese bike gurus. They had oil filter, air filter, and clutch cable in stock the first time I went there.

Hi There, The stock SR has a 530 chain and a 46/16 rear/front sprocket setup. I have a 17 tooth front and a stock rear, with a 530 O ring chain, this seems to work fine for me, I have no clearance problems, but then my bike is a 1980 model it may be slightly different to yours. But I should think the 17 tooth will be fine!
Cheers, Mikec.

I have a 17 tooth front on my '79 and a 530 o-ring chain won't clear the case area around the counter sprocket. But, a non o-ring fits. Hope this helps. Gary Hopwheels

Hi, Yes with a 17 an O ring chain is a problem. Insufficient clearance from the cases on the inside.
Use a good quality heavy duty normal chain preferrably; DID etc. Check the clearance with this one as well.
The 17 tooth is the preferred sprocket for the SR in my book. It gears the bike slightly higher and the SR will normally pull the extra tooth OK.
If you modify the bike with a pipe, carby, high comp piston etc. then you can gear it even higher...not on the front though as 17 is about as far as you can go. 16 teeth is standard.
I have a 525 chain on one of mine and I will fit a 520 to my new cafe racer, when I get to that point. I use a DID 520MX chain on my SOS racer.
