Hello everybody. I recently acquired a 1981 Yamaha SR 500 H. I've been told the engine was recently rebuilt; other than that the bike is in pieces. I'm fairly new to the game so any advice would be well appreciated. So far I've painted all the fenders and the gas tank and am working on a stencil for them. Now, I'm not sure whether to rebuild the original carb or to just buy a new one; but that's next on my list.

Welcome mate, plenty of info here. Carb...general consensus is you can get a simpler one that will increase performance and be easier to tune, plenty of threads on it in the Feul section.
Post a picture when you can.

That'll be lots of fun ! You'll really enjoy it when you get it going for sure . I scored a 82 bitser a few years ago , it took 3 months to get fully inspired and another 3 months to get it running & another 3 months to finish it & make it safe to ride . It was worth it and I dig it , I dont use it all the time but when I do it gives me the grinfactor . My parents found some pics of my first SR500 & gave them to me last week it was a 78 and the pics would have been taken in 81 I recon . So mate keep inspired & get her going , cheers from Dave.

Welcome, painting that tank was a great starting point. Keep posting pictures of your project, it's great to see one of these great bikes brought back to life.

Hey that'll actually be pretty cool man The state that it was in, in that pic, means you'll really get a lot of pleasure out of the project as it takes shape.
