Hello All,
I'm from Pullman, WA, USA and my offer was just accepted last night on a 1979 SR500. The thing was built the same year I was! I haven't taken delivery of it yet, but I'm pretty excited to start riding again and I thought I'd register with this forum as it looks like the best SR500 resource on the internet.
Here is what the owner said about the bike in the craigslist ad.
1979 YAMAHA SR500 CAFÉ RACER.
Not for the dilettante, this one must be kicked to be started. This bike has a lot going for it but it also has much to be done. It needs a little TLC to be perfect.
STREET SINGLE “THUMPER”
THE GOOD
SPECS:
• WISCO 540CC FORGED HIGH-COMPRESSION PISTON
• 37MM FLAT SLIDE MIKUNI CARBURETTOR
• VALVE ROCKER OIL LINE
• MEGACYCLE CAM
• SUPERTRAP STAINLESS CAN
• HEAVY VALVE SPRINGS
• CLUBMAN CAFÉ BARS
• URETHANE PAINT
• SIDE COVERS INCLUDED BUT NOT ATTACHED
• POWDERCOATED FRAME
• RECENT OIL & FILTER CHANGE
• ORIGINAL SRX600 TUNING FORK EMBLEMS
THE BAD
Needs lots of TLC:
• NEEDS TIRES, BADLY
• ROCKERS ARE CLATTERY AND NEED ATTENTION OR MAY BE CAM-CHAIN ADJUSTMENT
• NEEDS BATTERY
THE UGLY
• THIS BIKE REALLY WANTS A SOLO OR GUNFIGHTER SADDLE
• FRONT FENDER HAS A COUPLE OF DENTS IN THE TOP
I dont have a fsm for it yet, so I'm hoping that I can learn some stuff here about how to fix that rocker or cam tension problem whatever it ends up being.
As for riding experience, I sold my 2004 Yamaha R6 last summer to pay off some debt to buy a house. Now I miss riding and w/ gas prices as they are, I'd like a nice commuter to ride to work as well. I contemplated buying a new scooter for a while, but for the half the price of the one I was looking at at Yamaha, I was able to buy this thumper, so I'm pretty stoked about that. It wont get the mileage of the scooter, but it will take the hills quite a bit better and be more fun to ride.
Last but not least, here are some pics from the ad.
