Hello Everyone I bought my SR500, a 1979 model back in Feb 1987, fell in love with it and have treasured it ever since. I have bought and sold a few other bikes over the years but I cannot see me ever parting with the SR. I bought a second 1979 SR500 off ebay last year as a future project or for spares I have not made my mind up yet!. My main bike is totally original except for the cylinder barrel having been blasted to bare aluminium, a yamaha exhaust rocker oil feed conversion and I have recently fitted a genuine dunstall decibel silencer which makes the bike very loud. I was lucky to discover that a friend had stored it for 20 odd years in a barrel of oil and it was like new. I will post a photo of my bike soon.
Jim

Hi Jim, Welcome to the SR500 Forum! Also looking forward to seeing pics of your bike! Pretty good idea to store the silencer in a barrel of oil for that many years. I probably wouldn't have planned for that far ahead. Talk to you soon, G Man

My other SR500 is at the back of my garage with a pile of junk in front of it, I really could do with an original scrapper to make a good one from the pair as it is missing a lot of original fittings. As SR500's are almost as rare as hens teeth in Scotland I doubt that I will ever find one. I have only ever seen two others in the last 20 years!

Oh for a set of wire wheels like that . Oh well we get the good weather you guys got the better looking wheels . Went to a Historic Bike Club track day yesterday , saw some brilliant looking bikes Nortons,Ariels,AJSs,Trumpies, BSAs & 1 really cool Laverda 79 tripple plus plenty of RDs RZs Honda250s & 350s . Love the smell of that racing fuel & that deafning sound that goes with it , cheers from Dave (no SRs ,bummer! hmm may have to join up to fly the flag?)

Welcome from Canada!
I'm with Dave on the wire wheels - so much more "right" for the SR than the modern and very heavy mags we got on the North American model!
Of course it is all about perspective - several years ago we flew ourselves and our '78 to Britain and toured S-W England(friends there), Wales and over to Eire. At one Yamaha shop, everyone came out to look at the rare SR with mags and a rear disc brake!!! I should've found someone to swap with right there and then.
The folks on this forum are a WEALTH of information about this m'bike - ask them anything!!!
I bought mine in 1978 and in the '90s it languished while raising two boys, but I just couldn't bear to part with it. Partly due to the enthusiasm from the folks on here, I've done some work on it and now it gets used regularly. While it doesn't exactly set the asphalt on fire, I still can't help grinning at the stares I get - especially when I kickstart it.
A dying art...............
Chris
