My image didn't make it, but it's a 1978 SR500E, I bought it on eBay for about $400 more than I wanted to, but $700 less than my top bid. I had a TT 500 about 25 years ago as well as an XS 650 at the same time. After those I had an 1100 Special, but have not had a bike for the last 20 years. So this Summer my 60th birthday is coming up and the dear wife said I could have anything I want for it. I chose this nearly 30 year old classic. I'm having a blast with it, I look forward to many years of enjoyment with it, now if I can just get it running again! (No spark, new battery on the way).

...I'd be tempted to change the spark plug and possibly the plug cap while you're at it and start from a baseline... As you'd be aware they can be a little cantankerous to start at first...SR

Second off... How do I post an image? I used " img " tags and it didn't work. Here is a cut and paste from an old post of mine. Hopefully you can make some sense of it. It kind of rambles on a bit... The easiest way to post a link to a pic is by having your pic hosted in a remote photo album such as tinypic (http://tinypic.com/). So, go there(see link in brackets). Click on the browse button. It will open a link to your computer. If it doesn't go directly to your "my pictures" folder, make your way there. Click on the picture in your "my pictures" folder and then click the button to "upload" to tinypic.com. Once the upload is complete, there are some url's you can choose from on tinypic. Copy one which will be a url address of your pic. Then, come back to the SR500 Forum. Start a message. Look above the message box you type in and right above the smilies there are some little boxes. Click the one with the little globe in it. In your message two url tags will have appeared like this, but without the put your url here: (PUT YOUR URL HERE). You need to click in between the brackets so your curser is sitting there. Then paste the link you got at tinypic.com. (the url address of the pic supplied by tinypic after you uploaded it to their server) right where I have typed "PUT YOUR URL HERE".
The above is for posting a link to your picture for us to view. If you wish to actually put the picture in the body of your message, you will do exactly as above, except instead of the url button with the globe, you will click on the box with the little picture in it. The [/img] tags will appear. Place your url in between the img tags and your pic should appear in the body of your message when you post your reply.[/b] If you still can't make it work, or have more questions, just let me know. Hope this helps. G Man

...I'd be tempted to change the spark plug and possibly the plug cap while you're at it and start from a baseline... As you'd be aware they can be a little cantankerous to start at first...SR Thank you for your welcome and good advice. One of my first moves was to check the plug and the cap. I tried a new plug and still no spark. The local sportbike Guru (and Benelli tech lead) tested the coil for me (OK) and tested the battery under load and proclaimed that to be the problem. I sure hope he's right, as the battery arrives on Wednesday at great cost ($41), but cheaper than some of the other possibilities. My experience with the TT500 prepared me well for the starting drill for the SR. After failing to start with five or six kicks on an 85 degree day I tried a bump start down a two mile long grade. That took three tries with the last one a 35 mph attempt that finally brought the SR to life. It ran normally and even sounded well until a red light brought me to idle, it died then never to re-start. After a call to the wife to bring the van around to collect me (reminecent of the recent SUV commercial where a woman and child rescue a dirty Gold Star rider with the tag line "Daddy just had to have a motorcycle") I got it back home to diagnose the problem. But this is a small problem compared to nearly losing a swing arm bolt in the first 20 miles of riding my new prize. The bike developed a disconcerting wobble just after running a challenging downhill run of twisty road. The swing arm bolt was missing a nut and had come halfway out of the bike! I rode it for a three weeks with a pair of vice grips holding the swing arm on. One week to get the bolt and another two to get the missing nut. farm1.static.flickr.com/249/451000513_a8c2f3c452.jpg?v=0Funny thing is that ~url listed above~ (spaces omitted) doesn't work

Hi, Heh, heh...done that myself on a Honda 50 scooter many years ago...it wouldn't change down with the rocker type shift lever and when I looked down to see why...the swing arm bole was hanging half out and blocking the shifter! SR

Thanks G man !
Not being able to inline my picture must have something to do with my flikr account.
I'll have to try that tinyURL hosting.
