A recent convert to SR ownership bids all g'day from sunny Sydney. What a find this forum is! An amazing source of information and encouragement for all SR riders. After a dozen years or so of being motorbikeless, a rush of blood and a few strokes on the keyboard has seen a low km bog-stock 1985 SR (wire wheels and TLS front drum) arrive in my garage from the land of the rising sun. It's great to be running on two wheels again: and still coming to terms with the mysteries of starting an SR..... Watch for posts/ questions in the fuel system section. Keep up the good work !

WELCOME TO THE SR500 FORUM PETERSSON!
Glad to have you aboard. Any difficulties in importing a bike? I'd love to do it, but the red tape here in Canada is discouraging.
Talk to you soon, G Man

In Oz, vehicles and bikes over 15 years old can be imported reasonably easily. I went through the hoops for a private import from NZ, but the sale feel through.I eventually bought my bike from an importer in Queensland who brings in 20 or so bikes at a time, and usually has some SR's available. It worked out pretty well for me, and I may start a thread on imporst etc in the future. Cheers,

Well done mate...welcome to the site. Drum brakes on the SR are pretty good from my experience of one here in the ACT. SR

Good one Pedro , I love that wire wheel look ! Unfortunately the SRs that came in to OZ from 78-82 all had those mags( leftovers from the 650 Specials I suspect) . The conversion can be a mission in it self in a spare parts search ( the nearest wrecker for me is 300ks north). After reading what CJ did I just went out & bought a 85 SR250 with wireys & electric start for about $500Aus . So now I'm half satisfied each way & the collection gets bigger . (I think I'm getting totally hooked as I even checked out a cheep 85 Beemer the other day too) . Anyway sorry to hijack the thread , welcome to the site . Cheers from Dave from the other side of the island .

Welcome mate,
I'm in Sydney also, there are a few us here spread around - Shire, Hills, Inner-west, west.
I'll have to get mine sorted and rego'd again then.
I think I know the place you imported from, but would love to see a thread on it. I've been contemplating a newer sr400 import.

Milkman, I'll get the links to RTA and DOTARS sorted and start a thread when I get back from hols in a week or two. Importing older bikes doesen't appear complicated, just involves issues of trust (buying sight unseen) and dealing with government hassles.(time consuming). The biggest surpise for me was that transit insurance was very expensive: with most freight frowarders wanting a $500 USD minimum premium for $2000 USD minimum cover (for a bike worth not much more than the premium....) More on importing when time permits. In the interim, take a look at www.importmc.com.au which is where I got my bike from. They have, I believe, some SR's on the water and also wreck Japanese imports including SR's. Whaddya reckon about reaching out to Sydney-based forum members to get a ride going? I've seen a few SR's on the road since I goy mobile, and it would be good to see (and hear) a few thumpers rolling together. Cheers.

sounds good to me. Mines off the road currently - that time of year when everything is due for me, but I'd get there on something else until I could come good.

Count me in as well, although as my SR is miles away from rego I too would be on the other bike.
Cheers Rich
