Hi all I post on yamaha xt 500 under a similiar name and am a member of the Australian SR owners club (I live in UK). I have 2 SRs, one runner, one Australian import in a very sorry state which is one project. There's also a bobber with an SR500 engine on the bench which is the other project . I'm designing a new frame for an XT500 racer for future build, I've got an XS650 and a Triumph Daytona (hinkley) Think I've got my hands full

Thanks for the welcome folks. OK heres a picture I took the other day. The thing on the table is my self built bobber frame, still in progress. It has an XT lump in it, but I'm going use a the SR engine under the starirs as I want the XT one for a racer. Next is my SR, a recent purchase, has a few niggles but I'm working through them. Then my venterable old XS, had that a while now. In the foreground is my other SR project. An ill advised purchase from eBay. The owner forgot to mention that it was at the time in the hands of a breaker and had lost a lot of parts. Still I like a challenge and cash changed hands. It doesn't even have a UK registration at the moment. I found an alloy tank and a nice V-D classics seat the other day. I've decided not to do it as a classic cafe racer, neither will it be shiny and polished. What it will be is well sorted and fully restored, highly rideable and with a hot motor. I want to use only secondhand cycle parts and give it a style of its own.

Nice looking XS650, I recon that nearly every SR500 owner must've had 1 of them at some stage . I wish I had one now but they are as rare as rocking horse excreta around these parts . Mine was a 76 model & I bought it in 78 (nearly new) . All I remember was heaps of problems with those CV carbs they used to have on them , when I purchased my 1st SR in 79 I couldn,t get rid of it quick enough . Thats one of those here today gone tomorrow stories , Cheers Dave .

That is a 76 XS. The first ones with the Tait mods to the frame. The earlier ones look nice but the handling is too scary for my liking. This one is as sorted as it can be without looking modified. There is a fork brace under the standard mudgaurd and the swing arm has bronze bushes. The front suspension will get progressive springs when I get round to it. The rear has hagon shocks, which are way more controlled then the standard ones. The matched Bridgestones also transformed it, well recommended. I thought I had heaps of carb problems, until I changed the points for a Boyer. Now the 'carbs' stay in balance I do still have a few age related with the carbs problems in that its difficult to start, but I am getting some new bits from Allens to try and cure this.

That was the other thing that was wrong with my XS . Being an unfinished project , it had a 750 kit in it & it used to vibrate ( you couldn't see in the mirrors & your eyelids used to shake around in eyesockets) There must have been a need for a counter balance in the equasion ? I seem to think thats what buggered the carbs as well . ( I'll never know as I didn't have any wisdom at all ) ( maybe I still don't ) ? Here's to staying upright cheers Dave .
